Topic notification emails

Neil - perhaps this should be directed your way.

With the new Discussion Forum Power Board there has been a reduction in email topic notifications - I understand the reason is to reduce the flow into members' in-boxes. I'm not sure this is a good idea. I preferred seeing all the stuff submitted for topics where I selected that preference. That way, I didn't miss anything. Now I need to remember which topics I subscribed to, go back and visit them and see whether I missed anything between visits to the site - not as handy.

Of course different people would have different preferences. Perhaps you could do a poll, see what people prefer - or if both options can be made available so much the better, then adjust accordingly???

Cheers,

Mark

PS, congratulations - all of this is working well now.

Hmm, I've found a mode that allows me to get email notifications on topics afterwards, too.

But the board does keep track of whether I'm currently "active" (whatever that means) reading the topic or not, and won't send notifications about such topics.

As far as I know, I haven't missed any topics that I'm subscribing to, and I get nice links ending with "getnewpost" for every topic.

Of course, I can't recall how I managed to achieve this.

I haven't noticed any issues here.

Daniel, next time you receive a Reply to Topic Notification, have a look at the print near the bottom of the message, which says:

"There may be more replies to this topic, but only 1 email is sent per
board visit for each subscribed topic. This is
to limit the amount of mail that is sent to your inbox."

I am suggesting that this constraint be removed so that like before the switchover we systematically and automatically get notified of all contributions for which we have asked to be subscribed; furthermore, before the switchover the content of the contribution was included in the notification itself, which is very handy. I'm wondering whether there is enough interest amongst members to have these features restored - if possible and not too much of an imposition.

Yes, but what is a "board visit"?

Here's how it looks for me in the topic "Interpolation":

jani,

Dale Cotton has just posted a reply to a topic that you have subscribed to titled "Interpolation".

That is something that you adjust yourself at the time you elect to subscribe to a topic. You can then select "delayed" or "immediate" notification, among others. "Delayed" notification works in the way that you're complaining about, "immediate" is what I have selected, which seems to work exactly the way you wish.

furthermore, before the switchover the content of the contribution was included in the notification itself,
That was only true if you had selected that option.

which is very handy.
I agree, and I think it's very handy that we now get to see the content of the contribution that started a new topic.

I should hope it's possible. The new software and server seems far snappier than the old, so the only limitation might be bandwidth usage issues.

I also miss seeing people's full names in their profiles. Well, for those of us who have provided it, anyway. Now there isn't anywhere to enter it, except in the "Location" field or as a bogus ID for various instant messaging systems.

Now if we could get that and people would stop calling me "jani" instead of the name I sign with, I'd be very happy.

I see what you're saying. Changing your e-mail settings to "Immediate Email Notifications"" Fix that. As I remember I was getting an email after each reply before I switched it to "Delayed Email Notification" in my "My Controls" section.

That should work for you Mark.

For Everyone: the "My Controls" link at the top will give you a much nicer look at your settings than before.  To the right of it are new post tracking tools.  Inside the "My Controls" page on the left you'll see a colum of options.  There are many options you can enable to assist you in tracking topics and recieving e-mail updates.

Under the Options Category, click "E-mail Settings" to get a list of privacy preferences and notification preferences that are explained with the option buttons.  You should find the options more acomodating than the old software with fine tuning available.

Thanks Niel. The new Forum is operating very well, and more convenient to use than before - all in all a real improvement.
