Image is over-exposed once printed on canvas. Blacks are dark grey. Can I apply a coating to darken it?

Not really.
Is the canvas matte or glossy? If matte a satin or glossy will darken it a bit but not very much.
Sound like you have either a profile problem, a media setting problem, or both.
What is the canvas brand and printer?

It's 350gsm poly/cotton matte finish. I am a professional photographer, but outsource my printing and canvases, so I'm afraid I don't know what printer etc was used.
