How to use the forum?
« on: November 13, 2005, 07:35:25 pm »

I've been through the help files and pushed all the buttons now on the forum, but still (with my limited mental faculties) have a few unanswered questions. Examples:

1/ What is the 'quote' button beneath each post. I thought that clicking this would allow me to respond to that particular post including the original text. But no! It just changes from Quote+ to Quote- ....anyone know what this button does.

2/ When submitting a new post there is Guided Mode and Normal Mode radio buttons - what is the difference?

3/ When I respond to a post using Reply, and the message that I am replying to already contains a quote, how do I get the quote within a quote within a quote as per the previous forum instead of just the text from the previous message that appears as now.

thanks

Click the quote button and then the reply button and you'll get what you want.

Clicking the "Quote+" buttons will turn them to "Quote-" and let you quote more than one post if you want. Clicking Quote- will undo the quote selection.

Can't answer the other two...

OK, starting to get somewhere....

If you select the quote button and then press 'add reply' at the bottom of the message list then you get the selected quotations (highlighted as red buttons) in the message that you are replying to. However, the software does not appear to permit nested replies - i.e. you will only get the test of the most immediate message and not any quotations they have included in their message.

Secondly, if you do (as I was doing) press the quote buttons for messages you wish to quote and then press the '  " quote' button which appears at the end of each message you will only get the text quoted from the message with the "quote button that you selected and it will ignore any 'quote+/-' selections you may have made.

Thanks peeps.

I think if you want nested quotes you'd just have to hand type it with the UBB code.

Replying to your second question about "Guided" and "Normal" modes, this is a choice between two ways of formatting using bold, italic, font changes, etc.  In "normal" mode if you want to use one of the formatting commands you type it in bold italic in this case, but you must manually click the boxes right before and right after the text you want to format (or click "close all tabs).

In "Guided" mode you get some automated help.  Click a formatting box and a window opens for your text. When you close the window, the code is closed out for you.  Of course if you want to use multiple commands [span style=\'font-size:14pt;line-height:100%\']you need to go back to normal[/span] and then click "close all tags" when you're through.

Hope this helps.  It's a pretty standard discussion board feature.

I discovered something interesting about the Quote buttons by accident.

I was paroozing one forum and clicked the "+Quote" button accidentally. Not thinking about it I moved on to another forum section without clicking the red "-Quote" button that took its place. In the other thread I proceeded to add a reply to a post and low and behold, the quoted post I accidentally selected earlier followed me there.

Either the quoted information is being stored in a cookie (I could check my cookies to verify but I'm lazy) or it is stored on the LL server for some period of time until you go to post a reply regardless if you are still in the same thread or not. Doubt I'll ever use that but cool none-the-less.
