Great Salt Lake at sunset
« on: August 29, 2014, 04:31:58 pm »

I went out to the Great Salt Lake the other evening to catch the sunset. The lake level is the lowest its been in about 150 years. As a result, there are numerous rock and salt formations that have previously been covered by water. Took this image just as the sun was setting on the horizon. Used my 6d with a 24-70mm f/4l lens set at 24mm. Set the exposure for the foreground at 1.3 sec, f/22, ISO 100. Also used a 3 stop nd grad for the sky. I'm attaching 2 images, 1 color, and the other B&W. Comments???

Both nice versions of the scene. In the colour one, to my eyes the area of sky around the sun is a bit too bright, with its reflection a bit too bright as well. Perhpas it required a stronger GND?

Thanks Paulo. I agree that the horizon is to bright in the color version. It's a working imaging. 3 stop nd grad is the strongest one I have. Attached is another image with the horizon toned down alittle. I think it still needs some work though.

Do you have a shot from just after the sun dropped below the horizon?

I like the second color version of this image very much. The B&W is a bit flat.

3rd looks best to me.. anything more than the third stop ND I'd imagine would be noticeable with the challenge of the reflection of light.

Thanks for the comments. This was the first time I had a chance to use my new nd grad filter. Still much to learn.
