Ancient Pine & Water Reflections

Constructive critique highly appreciated.  I'm curious if other people will give me the same critique I would give myself on these two :)

Can't say either "does it" for me. The first is well-handled to bring out shadow detail in a very difficult lighting situation, but, to me, it's not original enough.

There must be more to the second than I am seeing. The water, the fish (?), the reflections, etc. – okay, but I'm left wondering why? Of course, one could ask "why?" of any photograph presented (or why bother?), but, in this case, there is no apparent story nor an apparent reason, at least that I can see. One might think it was a mistake, but the composition is too careful and intentional for that.

Have to agree with Terry on #2.  I am normally a fan of this type image and while the mood is nice I can't find anything compelling about the structure of the image.

I like the first image. It's well done but not extraordinary.

I'm more skeptical about the second one. I fail to see a strong subject or something draws my attentions such as colors, patterns, geometric lines, etc…
