Super Moon 7/14
« on: July 13, 2014, 01:54:49 am »

It looks just like the Honey Moon from the summer, but here it is! This will do until someone with better glass comes along...

Canon Rebel T3, 75-300 zoom at max, color adjusted in Camera RAW and popped in Topaz Adjust>HDR Collection>Dynamic Pop.

It is indeed impressive, we saw it here at the North Carolina coast last night. Then, it was still in the sky just after sunrise. E-M1 with 50-200 zoom.

That's nice Peter! Shooting it in daylight (great idea!) gave it much better context.

Notice how the angle of the Moon is different from when I saw it in LA last night.

And mine though it was a really lifeless night in a hazy milky sky.

I like that Chris, the Moon really pops and the overall tonal range is well-balnaced. The only thing I could ask for is a better centering of the Moon in the opening.

I deliberately kept it from being dead center...I wanted the viewer to become a part of the image, not have it jammed into his/her face.

Oh, it was so much simpler back in wet darkroom days. All you had to do was move the aspirin to a better position.   ;D

Great shots.
I love the boat and the water - inspirational.
Here is one taken early in the morning just outside of Lightning Ridge EF 100-400 1/60 sec f10
Sharpened in lightroom and cropped.

It's really clear out west and some nights are star filled wonders - and if you are up at the right time with the moon rising, pitch black and as clear as you would like.
A 100-400mm lens is all it takes.
(Oh to own an 800mm ....)
I actually left the 1.4 and 2x extender at home in the spare grab bag ..... lesson learnt on packing.

Doc, so THAT'S what sharp looks like-!

:)  cheers  - Yeah I guess so - it was cold really early and I was balanced on the bonnet of the 4x4 with a bean bag.
But I really wanted the shot.
It really helped that Mr Cannon made a great lens for me to play with.
(and My lovely wife let me buy it.)

The day shots of the moon I have seen are fantastic, I have tried in different areas to get them  - they just dont seem as sharp - .... maybe atmospheric conditions etc  ..... have attached one taken back in 2011 whilst we were down in Tasmania.
Taken at 436pm in the afternoon f11 - 1/125sec same lens Not as sharp - 5D MKII - the other was with the 1DX.

The Tassie shot was much closer to a city - so I am guessing more light pollution and so on.

... Really is it upside down ? or is it your moon that's upside down ?     :)

Found a few sites that are worth a look ...

http://www.mcpactions.com/blog/2011/03/21/super-moon-photography-how-to-shoot-the-moon/

Have been studying various techniques.
I have a ways to go ..... and am happy for any advice.
