Reinstall Epson driver Mavericks
« on: July 08, 2014, 04:32:53 pm »

Can anyone walk me thru the remove/reinstall driver procedure for the Epson 9900 and OS10.9.4 Mavericks? Or is there a way to undo an Apple auto-update of the Epson drivers?
Thanks

Hi again Jamie,

As I mentioned in my previous reply, I have no experience with Mavericks.  I'm sure you are familiar with the "Print& Scan" System Pref in Lion, where you would normal install and delete drivers.  If Mavericks has the "Print&Scan" pref as well, all you need to do is right click in the left pane where your drivers are shown.  Doing so will give you another option, "Reset printing system".  If you chose that it will deleter all drivers properly and you's have a clean area in which ti reinstall them.  The only drawback to that approach is that you will also lose your custom paper sizes that you may have created for roll sizes.  Although I never installed the Apple Epson Update and didn't experience the accompanying problems, there was a lot of talk about it and the fix on this and another forum.  As I recall, resetting the printing system was the ONLY way to clean out the troublesome Apple Epson Update and cure the problems.  Then all you have to do is reinstall the Epson Driver for the 9900 and you should be good to go.  However, if Mavericks does not have the "Print&Scan" Sys Pref, you could try the same procedure in the pref in which you added the original driver.  I hope this is of some help.

Thanks Gary.
What I have found is that uninstalling the Epson driver from a Mac with Mavericks is where the problem lies (besides the completely insidious auto-update from Apple, which screwed me up in the first place). Mavericks seems to hide  the driver away in new places, and simply locating it in the library and dragging it to the trash no longer works. I hoping someone here will have gone thru this and come to the rescue.

Mavericks has the Epson folder in the same place it has in the past. It is on your main hard drive/library/printers/epson

You need to delete this folder. Remove the printer from the printers and scanner window and then reinstall the 9900 drivers.  Hope that resolves your problem.

That sounds much the same as with Lion, as far as the location of the Epson printer drivers is concerned.  And yes, you can certainly do that, but instead of simply deleting the driver in Print & Scan, I would suggest the procedure I outlined in my previous post.  Right click in the driver window pane and reset the printing system.  I don't think you will have a completely clean install unless you reset the system, and the faulty update will still wreak havoc I believe.  Of course you can do the other procedure first and if there are still problems then you can take the reset route.  I'm almost certain the reset is required to get rid of the Apple Update, but again, not 100% sure about that.  By the way, can you not turn off the "Auto" update?  It's just me I suppose, but I like to have more control over any updates that are installed.  Especially that one!

In recent times the auto update of Epson drivers only affects consumer level products of printers and scanners. Apple and Epson seem to have gotten much better with the updates not causing as many problems as in the past. Yes, this poster is having problems but in general my clients have had very few problems recently with the updates coming down thru Apple.

I am running Mavericks and would suggest the same as others have, but I would add an additional step:

1. Right-click the printers list in the "Printers & Scanners" preference window and reset the printing system as others have suggested.
2. Find the Epson folder in /Library/Printers and trash the entire Epson folder as others have suggested.
3. (this is the additional step) Navigate to /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources and find any files that resemble the name of your printer and trash them.
4. Empty your trash and restart your computer.

Be sure you are not navigating to your User library, make sure it's the library that is accessed via Macintosh HD.

Best of luck!

And there's the key piece of the whole thing:
Be sure you are not navigating to your User library, make sure it's the library that is accessed via Macintosh HD.

In order to remove the Epson folder, you have to go to what is now (in Mavericks) an 'invisible' library. To get to it, rather than your user library, you have to option/click on the Go menu in finder and then select the library that appears in the dropdown. I've been banging my head against the wall for days trying to find an Epson folder in my user library that didn't exist. Till I learned this yesterday, I'd felt a bit like I'd been seeking the grail or some such thing!

Hi Jamie,

The ~/Library Folder has been hidden since Lion(10.7).  Making it visible in Lion was slightly more complicated, but in Mavericks it's a piece of cake(chocolate if you prefer).  Here's a link from Macworld that will show you exactly how to do it, no problem.  Hope this helps.
