epson 9890 cutter problem
« on: April 12, 2014, 03:33:18 pm »

I have a problem with my epson9890 cutter, after a cutter jam while cutting canvas the cutter now tears the printing paper very badly instead of cutting it . Could this be a blade problem or have i done more internal damage like a stripped gear to the rota cutter. I have noticed there is a very very small chip in the rota blade would that be enough to cause a problem, how sensitive are these blades. ??? all the best les rigby australia

Two possibilities, really. Either the blades have reversed their normal position (imagine it's a lot like scissors, the blades are flat on one side and angled on the other - they work only if they're in the right position).  This can be fixed.

Or, (and possibly the case based on your description), they're actually damaged (you mentioned the chip).  In that case, as they rotate, they'd catch there on the canvas and then you have your problem.  Indeed, it might be both.

I've never actually heard of them being chipped before - they're generally very robust.  However, they are user-replaceable.  If the printer is within warranty, contact your dealer and they should be able to sort you out.  If it's out of warranty, contact your dealer and get a replacement blade.  If it's out of warranty you could also take the current one out and see if you can fix it, but if you cause more damage you'd obviously be up for the costs so possibly not worth it.

Nope, not on the *900 or *890 series.  What you're describing was applicable to the older models.  The new models have a powered, rotary cutter and there is no adjustment for pressure (none required).

You can do adjustments to position, you can change return times and a few other things, but none of those relate to the issue experienced by the OP.

As I said above, the issues will be one of two things.

the cutter is a "consumable" replacement part and would not normally (unless Epson wanted to be nice ), be covered under warranteee.
Especially if it shows damage. If I recall correctly the replacement assembly is about $160 USD.
I never use mine for canvas. I have set for no cut,  and feed the end down to the end of the platten and the use that edge to guide a zippy cutter to do the cut. I know people swear by the new cutter life compared the the prior model... I seem to recall, recommendations by Epson to not use it for canvas.?

It blunts fairly quickly on canvas.  It would be warranty if the blades crossed (i.e. out of position) in my opinion, but not due to physical damage.  But the first thing to do would be to speak to Epson.

well i thank every one for there comments. I found the trouble and it was crossed blades as suggested by "Farmer", easily fixed by removing the bottom blade cover and resetting it. The very very small chip is the give away, caused when blades have crossed. You would be right about cutting canvas in future i will cut it manually as i think what has happened is the canvas has curled at the edge enough to double over when the cutter hit it causing enough pressure to jump the blades over each other :). The  replacement cutter in Australia is $260.
Once again thanks for the assistance, all the best les rigby australia

That's good news, Les - good job on fixing it :-)

Personally, we cut canvas with them, but it may depend on what you're using exactly and so you may prefer a manual blade.  You can set to "no cut" in the media specific of the driver.
