I like that a lot. Is it a trout?

I was going to say the image has a lovely rainbow effect, but you beat me to it.

Thanks to each of you for the kind words. Much appreciated.

David was of course right about it being a rainbow trout, native to the McKenzie River. If you ever find yourself in this part of the world, I highly recommend visiting the upper McKenzie, particularly upstream of the tiny village of McKenzie Bridge. The scenery, and the fish, are stunning.

That image is one that fly fishers see but in a fleeting moment.  The light, the water, the beauty of trout, the motion all combine.  The ability and the opportunity to capture an image of this fleeting moment is fortuitous.  You're standing in the water holding what amounts to hundreds of dollar's worth of fly rod and reel in one hand or under you arm or in your teeth, gently cradling this wonderful fish trying to release it with the least amount of stress, and at the same time trying to take a photograph.  Well done.

Wonderful image! Takes me back to fishing in Connecticut on the Farmington River, which had not nearly as colorful, stocked rainbows. (Miss the smell of the hemlocks.) Coincidentally, just in the last few days, I started to get my fishing gear ready for the season here in Maryland. Thanks.

Ah, I see there are some fly fishers here who understand the awkward logistics involved in capturing an image like this. Especially when one is by oneself, as I was here. Besides concentrating on getting the image I wanted, my main concern was not dropping camera or rod in the river!
