Antarctica 2014 Video
« on: February 27, 2014, 03:40:32 pm »

I have completed an 18 minute video of our recent Luminous Landscape trip to Antarctica.

It is now posted for all to view on .

It's also to be found on a stand-alone page on the Luminous Landscape site. Expand it up to full screen on an iPad.

Kevin will be publishing his Antarctica trip report here within a few days and the video will also be embedded there.

If your bandwidth supports it, activate the HD button and go full screen for best quality - it's worthwhile I think.

Chris

Very nice cinematography Chris! I really like the subtly over-cranked look. I also really like the shots at sunset with the golden color on the ice...I don't ever remember seeing that :~(

Thanks Jeff.
The golden ice was a first for me too.
The ice in the Graveyard was reflecting the sunset sky which was quite yellow that night - about 10:30pm.

Wow, and major props for the beautiful video!  I was glued to the screen.  I've never had such a sense of the place before.

Well done!

Very pretty. Shame about all those annoying photographers getting in the way and spoiling the shots though.  ;)

Very nice quality indeed! Good stuff.

Can I ask - what equipment did you use to shoot the footage?

I was wondering if you have a very steady hand or if you used some motion stabilisation in post to smooth out handheld jitter, because it was very smooth?
Other than the slowed down stuff, which would also help smooth things out.

a combination of in-lens IS, post-processing stabilization in FCP X and occasionally also a steady hand.

Actually, Chris is a really good camera holder...while we often shoot on "sticks" when doing the vid tutorials, Chris usually hand holds the action stuff in the field. I suppose a steady-cam might be useful sometimes, but usually, Chris can hand-hold stuff really, really well. Note, "no movement" isn't always ideal...but IS is often helpful. And you can fix a lot of shakey-cam in post!

I've always wanted to go there myself.  It is some of the last wilderness on the planet.  It doesn't help to see all those beautiful images on this site.  This weekend I went to the Range of Lights film festival in Yosemite Valley.  I thought this video was interesting about living in Antarctica for a year.  The time lapse is absolutely amazing.
