Canon 6300 deal or 6400?
« on: February 02, 2014, 04:07:14 pm »

I found a great deal on a new 6300 - about $1k less than the 6400.  Is there a noticeable difference in output between the two printers?  I'm not in a rush and was wondering if I might be better off waiting for a new round of rebates on the 6400 or just snapping up the 6300. I print landscapes and other fine art for sale, so image quality is very important.  i currently use a 3800 (Great printer. I may have run the cleaning a dozen times in the last 5-6 years). I have printed on a 7900, which is great, and have also considered a 7890, but the Epson maintenance stories make me very hesitant.

Thanks.

Probably the 6300 would serve you just as well as the 6400.  Same printheads, same inks.  I believe the 6400 is faster is one or more of the very highest resolution modes that wouldn't be used very much.

But I would strongly prefer a brand new machine to one that is used for that small price difference.

If you have outlets to sell prints, don't hesitate!  Move up to sofa-sized prints, those sell really well where I come from and will open doors to venues that might otherwise sneer at prissy little prints.  That's been my experience.

Did I say, but a 44" instead?  Check out the recent threads here on that topic.

30"x90" prints (40"x100" frame size) - $40 to print, $4000 to have archivally framed, another $400-$1000 to deliver...

$4040 to produce a 40 x 100?  More like $200, if you have the right kit of not very expensive tools and present mounted, coated canvas in frames.  Oh, you need a printer too!

The print and frame are cheap. It's the museum-grade, non-reflective, UV-blocking acrylic sheet that costs well over $2000... The matboard and backing board aren't cheap, either.

Keith Cooper published a good review of the 6400 here: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/reviews/printer/canon_ipf6450-pt1.html    If you search his site you will also find an earlier review of the 6300. These should be helpful in reaching a decision.

The 6300 has been discontinued and you may find it through auction sites or places like Craigslist.  The 6400 isn't much faster, though it has updated hardware and software.  However, the 6400 comes with 2 ink sizes vs the 6300 with only 1 size.  130 and 300ml are now available to save more with ink usage.

You'd be getting a better deal with the 6400 since it's newer and more updated with the same features as its previous model (just the larger ink option).
