Samyang 14mm fans: Samyang is making a filter holder for it
« on: January 22, 2014, 01:24:12 pm »

Courtesy of www.the-digital-picture.com/news , there is news of a reasonably priced filter holder for the  Samyang 14mm. Samyang's press release:
Samyang Europe introduces a new product to its lineup the SFH-14 filter holder designed specifically for the Samyang 14mm 1:2.8 ED AS IF UMC lens. In addition to the holder, three rectangular filters manufactured by Cokin company will also be released.

Samyang Filter Holder SFH-14

Samyang filter holder SFH-14 has been designed from scratch for the Samyang 14mm lens in standard and V-DSLR cine versions. The new filter holder solves the common problem of mounting filters on a lens that has been designed without filter threads. The holder is made of lightweight and durable ABS plastic. In order to eliminate internal reflections, its interior has been flocked giving it a velvety black color. The holder comes with two filter slots so two filters can be used simultaneously. The Samyang filter holder features a rotating mount so that filters can be used in both vertical and horizontal orientation. (NP: It looks somewhat like a cross between Lee and Ducroit, actual photo at the-digital-picture)

Three kinds of rectangular filters will also be made available, each 161 x 139 x 3 mm in size, specially designed and manufactured by the renowned Cokin company. The three filters will include the 154 ND8, 121M ND4 and 123s. Model 154 ND8 is a neutral gray filter of ND8 opacity that will allow for slower shutter speeds thereby enabling the blurring of moving objects (e.g. clouds, water, traffic). It can also be used by filmmakers who want to achieve a shallow depth of field in strong sunlight. The graduated 121M ND4 gray filter is mainly designed for landscape photography and architecture. It allows for a reduction in contrast between light and dark portions of the frame. The third filter available, the Cokin 123S, is a graduated blue filter that can be used to obtain or accentuate a blue sky effect in the landscape photography.

Interesting, I guess we shall how the Cokin filters turn out, last time I tried Coking filters they had a color cast to them. Nice pricing but we shall see the quality, sounds like it is mostly geared for the cine market.

+1 on the color cast for Cokin.  I also thought Cokin was long out of business so I guess this proves they are still around.

Glad to see the filter holder developed but it would have been nice to standardize on a size like 150mm x150mm as Lee and Hitech have.  Surely if this size works on the nikon 14-24 it would work on the 14mm Samyang.

It'll be interesting to see how it attaches to the lens and how it affects the lens cap installation/retention.

Thanks, Nancy.

There is already a Ducroit that fits the Samyang and uses 165mm filters, which is the standard size for all Ducroit users. I am pretty sure that the holder plus the filter cost more than the lens underneath it all. Ducroit holders run well over $200.00, IIRC, and I believe their filters are Hitech.

I will only really use this for seascapes at golden hour and the coking colour cast isnt always a bad thing then!

I've been using Cokin X Pro filters (GNDs) and the colour cast associated with the old "P" system filters has been rectified! I am sure that this is the case for the Z Pro range too?
