Your first guess is correct.
Peter are you familiar with the PS module the governs layers? If you duplicate the layer and then use the multiply or overlay command I think you can really enhance contrast and bring out the dark patterns.

I love this one. The ripples and alternating colors look like a sea with waves coming from two different directions.
Well done.

Good eye. I like it James, especially the highlighted white areas in the water. But I suspect, if the highlights were not there you would not have taken the shot.

A Gradient in Seattle

Very subtle, just enough to be noticed by a keen eye!
Well done.

Is this an example of ICMUW? (ICW Under Water?)

I like it.

Yes!  It’s always nice when someone else appreciates exactly what you found interesting in a shot.  Thanks!  And thanks also Eric and Francois :)

Fascinating crosshatch ICM.  Two (or more) exposures?

Thank you James for your comments. The second image is indeed a kind of crosshatch. But it is two images in rapid succession in a circular motion. It is truly experimental and no two results are the same. It is a slightly more predictable if you do two single exposures where you plan where certain elements in a scene will appear. Like this one where greens and reds were combined for a single image. Incidentally, one is ICM, a kind of background for the green yews. It too is very striking. And note how the overlap turned some elements purple.
