Thanks Michael.

My simplistic understanding was if a photograph or painting is not readily identifiable or classifiable into a specific subject, then it would be considered an abstract.

Should an abstract always be a derived from a "whole"? Cannot "the whole" be considered an abstract in its entirety?

It's a beauty Slobodan. Of course I like the pattern and rhythm, but I particularly like the more subtle movement from dark blue to light.

I really like all the recent posts here.

My own (very loose) definition of an abstract is something like this: "Any image that is interesting or fun to look at, where the interest doesn't lie in what the 'subject' was but rather in the visual effect produced."

In one sense, every "straight" photo is abstracted (via cropping in camera) from the scene in front of the camera, so I don't bother with that formal definition.

But that may be just me.

Here's one from a series of local "folk art" made of found items and suspended from wire beneath Chicago RR bridges. Many of the homeless who reside there under the RR bridges wanted to dress up their abode.
