Question about photo
« on: January 20, 2014, 09:42:08 am »

Good morning to all!
Can anyone explain why the photograph Sierra Lake Dawn by Alain Briot which can be found here:
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/briots-view/vision_part_8_hard_skills_and_soft_skills.shtml
has two unusual qualities?
First, the reflection of the mountain has a 'green cast' by the peak, but the actual non-reflected mountain has none
Second, the large pine tree on the left is green, but its reflection is quite brown.
If there's are obvious answers that I'm overlooking due to ignorance, please forgive me.
Thanks in advance.

There are more inconsistencies. For instance, cloud reflections are not always the same as the clouds they are supposed to reflect.

The image is a multi-stich panorama, i.e., composed of several (vertical) shots, taken at different times. This, in itself, would not explain the reflection differences. It appears that Alain combined the bottom part from the frames that were taken minutes apart from the top part. Given the rapidly changing morning light, it isn't surprising that there are color and cloud movement differences. Like cubists, seems to me that Alain wanted to capture multiple facets of the scene in a single image. He is actually calling it a "collage," quite accurately, it seems.

The brown reflection could possibly be explained by a superimposition of the color of the reflected objects and the ground color of the lake shining through in shallow water. You actually can see the ground shining through if you look closely.

Well-spotted but not the first time photographs exhibit inconsistencies with what we expect.

The brown reflection on the left is definitely the lake bottom showing. The brown mountain reflected as green - hmmmmmmm. Not something I've ever seen before.

Artistic license. It is not documentary photography. It is simply how he chose to present what he envisioned.

Hello everyone,

This is a collage of multiple vertical captures using a super wide angle.  I believe there are 7 captures total.  The stitch is only in the horizontal direction, meaning this is a single horizontal row stich.  The sky and land were therefore photographed at the same time.

The color of the mountain and tree reflections is simply due to what happened when the images were captured then stitched together. I made no attempt to correct the color of either simply because I like these colors the way they are.

If you are unfamiliar with my work you may want to read my artist statement at this link:  http://beautiful-landscape.com/Artist-Statement.html

It explains my approach to fine art photography and my refund policy in regards to images that would be unmanipulated.
