the fifties shootout on FlickrI am guilty of owning a bunch of 50mm lenses, so I tested them against each other on the A7r.
The distance is around 1m, focus is in the GMB Card, light is one softbox from the side and one small flash in the upper corner.
I tried to focus on some of the problems I encounter in my daily life as a food photographer:
- Strong backlight with flare
- high contrast
- fringing on metal reflections
- textiles and moiree
- banding in reds
- dark, mushy shadows
- blown highlights
I was amazed how bad some lenses did, especially the EF 50mm 1.2
My two most favourite lenses, the Leica 50mm Lux asph and the Olympus OM 50mm f2 macro did just great, as did the 80 year old screwmount Elmar.
Unfortunately my metabones Mk3 stopped working, so I had to use the Mk1, which vignettes a lot, but you should get the idea.
these are plain shots Raw to Jpg, no adjustment was done, the difference in exposure is due to inconsistencies in F-Stops, I used a Profoto D4, which is very consistent.
Which is your favorite lens?
have fun
p.s.: If you don't like my methodology, I don't care a bit, I did this for me, not for you!
