Removing ICC profiles from what seems like an endless list...
« on: September 14, 2013, 11:36:42 am »

Help. I have scoured the internet and this forum, and not found a doofus-proof answer...

I run PS5 on a Mac and print with an Epson 9890. When I print I only use about six or seven ICC profiles, tied to my paper choices.

How do I remove all those other profiles that I don't use? I'd like to just move them to a folder called "Unused Profiles" and store that somewhere else.

In Library -> ColorSync -> it only shows a few profiles, mainly the ones I installed myself. Where are all those endless Epson profiles, for example...?

The ColorSync utility will show you where all ICC profiles reside on your Mac. Some, like those installed by Epson drivers are in a package deep in your system but once you find them, you can if you wish, delete them.

Just one of the little things that makes Lightroom so much better to print from, for me anyway.
You can just put a check mark beside the profiles you normally use and only those show up as your choices.

digitaldog... YES. I know! I found the few in Colorsync. I wrote that. The question is WHERE deep in the system to find the rest and delete them. Please help if you know.

The CS utility shows the path to locate the profiles.

OMG pls dont yell at me, but what does that mean "the utility". I hate to "play the card" but I'm an artist, I'm not technical... do you mind walking a noob through this process?

Or can someone else help me?

How can I remove all the ICC profiles that I probably will never use from the list of endless profiles?

This may not be complete but on my mac profiles are found in the following folders:

library/application support/adobe/color/profiles

library/colorsync/profiles

library/printers/hp/profiles/designjet (your printer will be different)

users/yourname/library/colorsync/profiles

some programs access from different folders so you may need to experiment to delete them.

The ColorSync Utility. It shows you where all the profiles reside, even inside packages. Go to those locations to delete them. IF they are in a package, you need to option click on package, select Show Package Contents, then you'll see individual profiles.

typical path for epson profiles on a mac

Boot hard drive/Library/Printers/EPSON/Inkjetprinter2/ICCProfiles/xxxx.profiles where xxx will identify the printer name (ex: Pro11880.profiles)

On some the Inkjetprinter2 may not have the 2.  The file you are looking for (xxxx.profiles) is a MacOS package (basically a folder that does not open when you double click it, keeping the contents somewhat protected)  You right click on the file, and select show package contents.  Move whatever profiles you don't want somewhere else (or delete them if you know you will never use that paper type..

If you reinstall the printer driver, the profiles will be back.

Here's hoping David Hackell thinks my mention for a way to do this similar to lightroom is worthy of consideration and will show up in PS CC in the near future (although I no longer print from PS so it doesn't really bother me anymore)

LR is helpful because when you print from LR you can get a list of installed profiles which can be opened and have profiles added to it or deleted from it. The profiles are not deleted from your computer, just from the LR list and can be added back in at any time. As I understood your first post you didn't necessarily want to delete the profiles but just move them to an archive folder until they are needed. The LR function will allow you to do essentially that without actually modifying any system folders on your machine.

You'll also probably find the LR printing functions much more useful and versatile than those of PS.
