I wonder what would be the environmentally responsible way to get rid of empty carts?

Recycle if you can.
Tastar Supply
www.tastarsupply.com
has a recycling program for Epson professional wide format printer cartridges. Website is not the best, but it's easy to figure out the form, send it in with your cartridges. Tastar gives you a small credit that you can use on future purchases from Tastar Supply. Ink prices are competitive and free shipping. Nice folks.

Ken,
Thanks for the mention. This link will take you directly to the recycling page.

HP offers free recycling. They sent me a box with prepaid shipping back to them.

Regular disposing of a complex, highly-manufactured plastic/electronic item as a business model is inexcusable. Carts should be easily refillable.
Inkjet ink is more expensive than human blood. It is also 95% water.

My carts are from my Canon 8100-guess I should have mentioned that at the beginning.

Best Buy also has recycling bins. I would also check other office supply stores like Office Depot and Office Max.
