Profiling LexJet Banner Vinyl on the Z3200ps
« on: August 22, 2013, 01:46:21 pm »

I recently had a request to do several 6 foot and 12 foot banners (something I just don't do) and wanted to help out the customer, so agreed to do it.  I got  a roll of LexJet TOUGHcoat™ ThriftyBanner (42 in x 40 ft) and had to make a quick decision about a profile, so I downloaded the HP Polypropylene Matte profile from HP's website and loaded the vinyl and calibrated.  I tired to profile and it wouldn't let me.  Tried it several times and had to restart several times.  I'm guessing it was because the Lexjet media is 16 mil and the HP media is only 7 mil.

Anyway, I had promised the customer a rush job, and went ahead and used the canned profile and they came out well - no problems, particularly as I had disabled the cutter in the profile properties.

Later, Lexjet suggested I download and try  the HP Opaque Scrim preset, to see if that would be an improvement.

Before doing that, thought I would ask, yet again, for opinions and approaches, prior to running another unknown preset.

Really?  Not one vinyl sign user with a Z3200ps?  Come on guys - someone has done this before....

Ernst - where are you man - I know you have an answer.

Okay, okay, I know it's not a fine art paper, LOL, but we all have customers and sometimes we do favors, right?

BTW - if anyone ever needs to make a banner for a trade show or for your kids lemonade stand, or whatever - this stuff, ( LexJet TOUGHcoat™ ThriftyBanner ) is great.  Really tough, a lot of weight and undoubtedly will stand up to a lot.  I took a sponge and tried to wash off the calibration chart and as hard as I scrubbed, it wouldn't touch it.  I ran a fingernail over it and nothing serious, at all.  I put a fold in it with a crease and bent it backwards and smoothed and the crease disappeared like nothing had happened.  Great stuff, for what it's for.

The blockout scrim is pretty nice. Two coats of clear and it'll probably last as long as solvent printed banners.

Nice.  But the same is true for this product:

"A Heavy Weight Coated setting is the recommended starting point. However, we recommend a custom ICC profile for optimal results. Please refer to www.lexjet.com for starting-point ICC profiles for some printers."

When you go to support for ICC profiles, there are no profiles for HP Z3XXX printers since we make our own.

Where to start in order to create a reliable profile for these materials?

Fine Art Paper More INK?

Got me - it's a mystery to me.

Mark,

Check at least what the media preset choices are for Canon or Epson Models at LexJet. MK or PK too. Find an equivalent in Zs preset choices. Cutter of I wolle guess.
No experience with heavy Banner materials.

Ernst, op de lei getypt.

Thanks Ernst - yes, first thing is cutter off, for sure.  Hmmmmm.  PK.  Now that's interesting.  I will check into their recommendations for the other printers.  Good input, Ernst.
