IPF5100 error code
« on: August 09, 2013, 06:00:51 pm »

Hi
I got an error code on my Canon ipf5100 printer E161-403F.
Any thoughts. The vendor said the print head is bad.
I can't get the printhead to move  into a replacement position even if I had a new printhead with me. All controls are locked except on and off.
Any suggestions on what is wrong or what I can check?

I know this is a real late response but this just happened to my ipf8300.  Left print head overheating was what the tech told me on the phone.  Nice guy sent me a replacement print head for free overnight.  +1 for Canon tech support!

Glad to hear they are keeping it up. About six years ago I had an in-warranty head failure in my iPF 5000 - one call to tech support and new $600 head  (2nd gen PF-03) overnighted. Repeated stellar service with the other head a few weeks later. And the same a few years ago with a defective ink cart.

No need for service the past years with my 5100, and no idea what the current contact # is, but should be in their large format printer website section.

Just talked to a canon rep. My Printer was 3-4 years old and was on it's 2nd set of inks.
I get to buy a new printhead-no luck on a canon nice guy

That's very little usage, which seems to be a common thread in premature head failures.

My head replacements were within the warrantied first year with the 5000, lasting five more years and many dozens of carts when I replaced it with the 5100, going strong with a total of 44 carts replaced so far.

Canon Customer Support Center
Hours:   Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. ET, excluding holidays
Phone:   1-800-423-2366 (toll free)

As far as not reaching a nice tech I know what you mean.  I called 4 months ago with a right print head issue and sure enough they told me it was out of warranty and needed to purchase one (which I did).  I just happened to get a nice one.  As far as little use causing print head issues, I had know idea until couple months back that this would cause this problem.  So I guess I'll order photo paper and at least once a week print out a photo if I print nothing on canvas.

So my printer is back to running

The left print head had to be replaced but the printer wouldn't allow me to change the head. I wound up starting up the printer in the service mode and when I saw the head move to where I could reach simply pulled the plug out of the wall. I pulled the bad head out and then restarted normally. It then told me to replace the head and I was able to replace it the normal way.

I just hope the other print head doesn't die soon.
