Zeiss 135mmf/2 APO Sonnar
« on: August 08, 2013, 01:54:51 pm »

Photo in Michael's review today shows an f/1.8 lens. Link to B&H for Canon mount shows the f/2 lens.

It is obvious that the pictures just got mixed up. The "Sony" on the lens pictured is the clue.

Then the big question :  Are the Sony Zeis 135/1.8 and this new 135/2  similar lenses (quality wise)?

Forgive me for saying so but this review omits what must surely be the most important consideration. How's the "unboxing experience"? This appears to have become a central component of the rebranded (Carl) Zeiss marketing philosophy.

So... it's not only me wots spaced a teensie weensie bit!

I have kept all my golden Nikon boxes the last time around in this format - does that count for brownie points? I certainly hope so; need all I can get.

I was hoping you would do review on your birthday present Michael!

It looks to be a top notch performer!

I subscribe to Lloyd Chambers and he has done several comparisons. It certain seems to be king, even compared to the Leica 'R' APOs.

Will be interesting to see what this Zeiss 55mm f1.4 will deliver.
Could be in time for a  Christmas present ;)

The now and the near future ...
« Reply #7 on: August 13, 2013, 03:01:17 pm »

Right now, it looks like the 135 Sonnar is king of the hill but what will the near future bring?  The Sigma 135 Art is supposedly coming down the pipeline this fall and we should consider the 35 Art before throwing the 135 Art under the bus.  For Nikon users, the rumor is of a 135/f2 replacement from them as well.  Do you the bird or wait for the two?  I like my 35 Art over my Zeiss ...

If the lenses compared with the APO Sonnar all performed exceptionally well at f/5.6 then it seems that the price premium of this lens is justified only if one can take advantage of its performance at wider apertures.

EDIT: never mind, I just remembered that this is a manual focus lens.  I find that a well-corrected lens is much easier to focus quickly and accurately so there is significant benefit to using this lens even if the working aperture is f/5.6 or smaller.

Ah yes, Michael forgot the "unboxing" report! That is SO important! LOL

ps. what the hell is wrong with people that they get off on unboxing reports? Who the hell cares and WHY?

The unboxing is a lot like a strip tease for geeks.

Nikon patented a 135/1.8 design last year.  But at f/3.2 on, I still like the 135DC.
