Migration from PC to iMac

Hello All

I'm in the process of moving from Windows Vista PC to an iMac OX.

At the same time I'm also updating Lightroom from version 4 to 5.

Would someone please outline the preferred methodology for this migration.

I helped him w/ the LR migration.  In an abundance of caution, we left LR & its catalog in place on the PC and merely exported the catalog to a portable HDD that was formatted for use w/ iMac and then moved it to the iMac  and opened it in his new install of LR. Worked fine. 

Having cut my teeth on the original IBM PC, I didn't see any advantage to the Mac.  Some things are easier, some positively obtuse.  Mostly a "push" IMO.  One strong recommendation is to get a "real" mouse with two buttons (minimum) and a wheel.  The Mac mouse was horrid, and needing a keystroke to get a right-click was archaic.  But at least there are lots of good options as I understand it.

How would you move your work from one Windows computer to another? It's not that much different. Move your catalogue and your images into exactly the same folder structure as now. Initially you get question marks on the folders, because a Windows folder path is different from a Mac one, so you will also need to point the top level folder.

At the same time I'm also updating Lightroom from version 4 to 5.
Would someone please outline the preferred methodology for this migration.

Move to Mac first. Once you're up and running with LR4 on Mac, then switch to Lr5. Don't confuse the two steps.

Huh? While I did post with at least part of my tongue in my cheek, I believe that a suggestion that will save someone unneeded expense, time, and hassle is about as helpful as it comes.

Had he asked for it. But he didn't. He didn't say he is considering moving to Mac, he said he is moving. Smart-ass? Yes. Humorous? Perhaps. Helpful? No.

This is excellent advice, and what I did helping my friend.  Since LR5 needs to "upgrade" the catalog, it is better to have one "in place" in LR4 first.

I suspect this is only an issue for folk like me (and the OP) who are accustomed to the PC type mouse - and so is relevant, I think.  In fact, I'd go so far as to say that most of the "preferences" between PC and Mac are based more in "what one is accustomed to" than any real advantages/disadvantages of the platforms.  That's my experience, anyway.  Much of the Mac I didn't like, but I also recognized that I didn't like it because it was different, not because it was worse in some way.

The mouse, in my mind, is an exception.  LOL

I've been on Mac since 2005 and my mice (mouses?) always had a right-click. The latest incarnation I am currently using has it as well, plus scrolling, both up-down and left-right, by swiping a finger across the mouse (just like we use it for iPhones and iPads these days). Rather natural movements and no need to clean the wheel periodically.

I've been doing everything they mention (except the two-finger swipe) for years on my trackball (PC). I've never had a yearning for a "two-finger swipe" or an overpriced i-pad, either.

LOL.  This is the mouse my friend had.  My opinion is that it was very clumsy and imprecise.  Perhaps practice would have helped, but my impression was that it would never be as precise as my logitech wheel mouse. To wit; wheel tilts left/right for pan, wheel rolls for scroll, wheel clicks for page down, forward and back buttons under my thumb, left & right click buttons.  Very straight forward and not dependent on proper "gestures" (which made me nuts on the "tragic"  mouse).

Probably my ignorance of Mac "norms" then.  I had to hold down a key and click to get the equivalent of a right click in "PC."   How does one right-click on the "one button" Mac mouse - I love learning new stuff.  Oh, and BTW I've been a PC guy since there was such a thing and have never had to clean a mouse wheel.

Thanks for the reply's to everyone (whether tongue in cheek). It wasn't just a case of Adobe not supporting Vista in LR5. My system was becoming so antiquated that my hobby was suffering. This was just the straw to open the wallet!
