What in-camera settings affect raw images in a Canon 5D?
« on: July 14, 2013, 03:05:32 pm »

Hello,

Is a raw image from a Canon 5D completely unaffected by any settings?
Color Temp?
White Balance?
Picture Style?

Thanks,
Bill

The answer is none of the above for your RAW output...however the image on the LCD screen is affected by those camera settings as it is a jpeg rendition on the image.      ;)

Well...... not quite.  Your initial previews in a RAW converter will pick up the white balance setting.  Colour temp and white balance are the same thing.  With a RAW file; however, the WB setting is not locked in, as it is with a JPEG, so you free to adjust it if the in camera setting wasn't what you wanted.

Thanks Bob,

I wondered because in the latest build of DPP, the Picture Style list for an image now shows a camera symbol in front of the style that was set in camera.

Canon DPP likely respects any settings you made on the camera but they are just starting suggestions.

Commonly used EXIF settings: exposure, WB (which is more than just color temperature) are respected by every other raw converter I have used. "Picture Style" settings generally are not as they are in a manufacturer's proprietary data forks. This includes any sharpening and color space settings.

Your "Picture Style", sharpening, and color space  settings  affect not just the look of the image on the camera's preview screen but also the data used to build the in camera histogram.

To add to what Ellis said, Adobe has created presets that try to mimic the proprietary in camera settings.  You'll find these in the Camera Calibration panel of either Lightroom or Adobe Camera RAW.

Thanks for responding,

That clears up the issue for me.
