Shad Thames morning
« on: June 14, 2013, 05:38:51 pm »

The 1st image sold and I've been asked to make another version. I have processingitis and so would appreciate any opinion or preference. Thanks.

My preference is for #2.

The first (top left) is a bit heavy; the one on the right has a bit more life and depth to it.
The bottom two just go too far for my personal tastes, but others may differ.

Beneath all the complexity is the simplicity of the light and buildings pointing downward to the man in the street.  IMO great photos have the anchor point for the eyes which the man provides.  Without him, my eyes would constantly scan the entire image. Great capture.

I don't believe color will add anything to this photo because there is a lot of information which will have diminishing returns if you add them and may even be a distraction.  In the 2nd photo the red and blue distract me from the man. I like the bottom row but it goes a little bit too far in removing information.  Seeing a few more versions would be good and I would love to see them.

Of the three reprocessed versions, I think the first is by far the best, although I'd tone down the blue of the Pizza Express awning. None comes close to the first, though.

Thanks for your help. You're probably right, but I'm still a bit biased to #3, the expressionist, darkest version. Fresh eyes often make better aesthetic judgements than the stale eyes of an editor.

My favorite is #1 with #2 as a close second. The third and fourth versions, with this heavy vignetting, look a bit weird to me, but it might only be me.

#1 for me, simpler is in this case better, I think.

I like the color of #3, but like the amount of exposure in each area of #4.  So a pure black and white of #4 is what I would like to see.

Yes that's great.  1st image is the best, but the last is the best variation.

I like top right, as it gives me the feeling of going back in time, as you progress from color to B&W. So I think I would go with that and add some of the grain effect in the black and white areas, just a bit more subtly, not quite as much grain as the bottom two.

The first is excellent, by the way.

I think the first one would work better with some subtle obscuring of the Pizza Express sign. Just my opinion, but the later two versions have the advantage of vignetting that takes the contemporary commercial reference out of what is otherwise a very timeless scene.

Really nice image, definitely worth the processing effort.

Shad Thames is right by Tower Bridge. The balconies connect apartments now, but were irregularly constructed at a mild slope to roll barrels across from the Thames adjacent warehouse at Butlers Wharf to the next warehouse across.

Agree - The Pizza sign puts a time stamp on it.

To pizza or not to pizza, that is the question. Point taken, thanks.
