Hy6 Focus Screen options
« on: April 13, 2013, 11:28:30 am »

I wonder if anyone can state the options for Hy6 focusing screens. I shoot architecture and getting critical focus is sometimes challenging. I used my view camera loupe which helps, but of course that is beginning to scratch the plastic focusing screen. I know that a new screen is in order and any suggestions or experiences would be very helpful.

1) Would the glass screen for a 6008 / Hy6 be a better solution?
2) Is there a split focus screen?

Thank you very much for your wisdom here.

There are quite a lot of options for screens for the Hy6.   DHW (Rollei) offers several with split screen. Here are a couple to look for:

Bright matt screen with central split-image wedge and microprism ring   part no.  97069
HD screen, super-bright screen with horizontal split image spot and extremely fine texture  10772
Clear glass screen 97054

I have seen a gridded screen with split prism and micro colar but not sure of the part number.

IMHO the clear glass screen works well for macro work.

DHW offers a magnifying finder base (chimney style) which uses a big schneider lupe which might be worth considering for accurate focusing and where you won't have to put your lupe down on the screen.   It has more magnification than the other prisms, but you can still see the entire screen and the display.

Additionally you can order a custom screen from Bill Maxwell Precision Optics.  He can even make you a split screen going diagonally.  This might be worth considering since I think he can tune the screen for different focal lengths.  If you are using wide angles mostly for example...

Hi Kevin

2 messages a good one and a bad one:

There is a very good Grid Screen for the Hy6, it also has a split screen focus in center. That is probably the best screen ever made for any MF camera I know.
I have adapted some of these for our HCam already, the focusing accuracy is much better than the also good Accumate Hasselblad Screen from SWC/Arcbody.

Now for the bad news. They are out of stock and not produced any longer. DHW doesn´t have any and the supplier of these seems to have stopped making them.
If you find one on ebay or at a dealer buy it immediately, they are really RARE !

I am also not a Rollei specialist, but I was pointed to this from my Partner Wiese Foto in Hamburg, he is a Rollei repair service and he also did the adjustment for our HCam for the Hy6 Screen (which is normally too small and needs to be framed for the Hasselblad V Viewfinder adapter). I think the number for the screen is Typ 97069, it was a dedicated Hy6 screen.

If this is really the screen DHW has listed, then maybe they have gotten some more supply. My Info was, they are out of stock.

Thank you Stefan,

So if I get this correctly, the Hy6 needs it's own screen and a 6000 series screen will not work, correct? There are lots of screens out there for the 6000's.

Best,

Kevin

The 6000 series are interchangeable with the Hy6/AFi, I know that for sure 100% as I have both cameras and have moved the screens around.

Thank you so much Eric. This is very good to know. I will be scouting those screens and I believe one of the links I listed earlier is the one.

You guys are very helpful and I greatly appreciate it.

Best,

Kevin

I have this exact screen in my Hy6 and it is really great. Though mine has a microprism around the center-split prism as well. The grid works great to hold the camera level. I get lost really fast in the big finder of the Hy6, especially with the WLF....
