What is this tripod leg thing?
« on: April 05, 2013, 05:13:21 am »

Just curious, haven't seen it anywhere before. Anybody knows what these "ears" on the tripod legs are?

It's an aluminum Gitzo 410C . The ears are the locking collars on the tripod leg. The "C" in 410C means the center column is gear driven. I have owned the same tripod model since 1986 and used as recently as two days ago. The tripod head is a Sinar tripod head: one of the four best heavy duty tripod heads ever made. The others are the Arca-Swiss C1 "Cube", the Foba ASMIA, and the large geared Majestic heads). Mark is using it to support his Sinar P2 8x10 camera.

Ellis, thanks for all this info! I actually had to look up the Foba and Majestic heads, they are very interesting...

I use the Foba ASMIA head regularly. If you are interested in a Majestic head I have one in good shape that I do not use. Make me an offer. It has the insert for use with a tripod with a 3/8" screw for mounting to a tripod.

There is another other heavy duty  top of the line tripod head I forgot to mention, the Arca-Swiss B2/Z2 Monoball. This is not a ball type head although it looks like one. The lateral tilt (roll) angle is centered inside and separately controlled from the fore/aft (pitch) angle.  I replaced a B2 with an ASMIA a few years ago.
