Pricing For Wallpaper
« on: March 04, 2013, 09:58:58 am »

If someone wanted to use one of your images for this how would you price it? If you were also going to print it yourself how would you charge for that? By the sq.ft.?

I'd probably charge by the square foot.

And I would prefer to have a graphics outfit do the printing, contracted directly by the buyer.  There are bound to be headaches that will arise, and I always try to stay out of the headache loop.

If your talking Phototex and have at least a 44" printer you can tackle this yourself.
Excluding the image I charge about .05 per sq. in. $7.25 a sq. ft. Less if it is a large wall.
Using OnOnes Perfect Resizes tiling feature takes all ( most) of the work out of the process.
Just set your desired overlay in the box and print. Let dry, roll in a tube and send.
You can print a 10ft. Wide by 8ft. High wall in 3 tiles.
If you are hanging and trimming that is another thread.

I am presently working on an order for a world map on a radius wall.
The client builds snack food ovens all over the world.
The world map we will be using can be edited by In Design.
The client will be adding a small logo on the map via In Design at every location in the world where they have equipment installed. As they sell and install at new locations they can be easily added to the map and then reprinted. Being reposition able you can pull the Phototex tiles off the wall and add the new ones.

In my quest to start offering wall murals I contacted a firm several years ago here in the States that represents landscape photographers and distributes their images via individual licenses.
They liscense their images and have the hi resolution files required for 20x10 ft. walls.
Do not remember what the cost was but it was pretty high. My use would have been to set up a library for landscape wall murals in commercial and residential real estate.  Too many logistical problems so I have tabled the idea. For now I cannot find that info but if I can dig it up I will be happy to share.

Dan,
I have tried phototex on my 8100. Your idea of targeting commercial real estate clients really interests me. Any way I can keep my 8100 printing sounds good. Can you tell me the name of that company you contacted?

I am digging but still have not found it.
In the mean time here is a firm that specializes in this type of work.

Dan,
Shouldn`t the wallpaper be coated with something so it can be washed off if necessary?

The Phototex is surprisingly durable for interior without a coating.
That being said I have done several trials here.
After proper print drying I sprayed 2 light coats of the solvent based Clearstar Clearjet FA onto the Phototex.
Excellent results. Good uv and moisture protection.
I have an exterior test in the works as well.
I printed a Phototex panel and stuck it to a piece of Dibond.
Then ran it through the laminator attaching a vinyl overlaminate.
It has been hanging out front for 7 months and still looks quite good.

Dan,
What kind of laminator do you use?

Seal 44 Ultra with hot roll and a Seal 62 Base cold roll.
Cold roll manual machine is all that is required for this process.

Is it required to print without margins? Otherwise you would have to trim the edges? I don`t think my ipf 8100 can do that.

No printing to edges is required.
A good trimmer like the Javelin Keencut is one option.
The 96" Purple Ruler and razor is a whole lot cheaper at about $275.00
