17" printers and 3:2 aspect ratio prints
« on: January 23, 2013, 02:46:09 pm »

I use both 4:3 aspect ratio cameras (medium format and MFT) and some 3:2 aspect ratio cameras side by side. I usually try to compose to the aspect ratio I'm shooting with due to the more standard framing and packaging options available. Hy question is regarding the 17" printers and what the highest "standard" hight I can print is that i can get cut sheets for. I have looked at 13x19 sheets but that only gives me a 11x6.5" print if I want to maintain a nice margin around the image for signing and matting. I find 12x18 does not give enough room at the margins of the print.

Are there any other standard sizes that I can look at ? My 4:3 images i generally print at 15x20 on a 17x22 sheet and it works out nicely as far as margins and standard crystal clear bags and other packaging supplies.

I've been buying 17x25 inch cut sheets from several companies and printing 16x24, though I could print smaller for more open area around the print. Not really a standard size, of course. But the largest cut sheet that will fit my 3800.

It's easy enough to get roll paper and cut sheets to size using a Rotatrim cutter.  I regularly cut 17x25 sheets of Museo Silver Rag (which does not come in this size from the manufacturer).  Paper is easily flattened prior to printing by reverse rolling.

Apart from 17 x 25 inch sheets (Harman Gloss Baryta, some Red River, some Moab papers, and perhaps others), and cutting down from 17 inch rolls; some manufactures have 24 x 36 inch sheets. A 24 x 36 inch sheet cuts down to 17 x 24 with only 2 inches of waste, and there are no curling problems. Some Canson, Museo, and Hahnemühle papers come in this size.

There are also some papers from Moab and Museo in A2: Museo Portfolio Rag and Moab Entrada Rag, for example.

Brian - you are full of it!! (Great info and advice I mean).

What a simple but cost saving idea!  I just checked prices at B&H for Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 GSM.  25 sheets of 17x22 (delivered) is $152.59.  25 sheets of 24x36 is $173.50 (delivered).  So for just $21 more I get an additional 25 sheets of 17x24 inch Photo Rag paper.

I have a 30-inch Rotatrim in the closet that will soon be put back into use!

Yes, the Hahnemühle 17 x 22 inch sheets are overpriced, and the 24 x 36 inch sheets are underpriced. I used to use it, but have switched to Canson Rag 310: smoother surface, slightly whiter but no OBAs, less recurling, and crisper greens, but more expensive in the 24 x 36 range.

Don't cut it until you need it, if you are thinking of a 24 inch printer.

You could take a trick from us roll using mavens, and dedicate a 15 x 22 inch section of those 17 x 22 sheets to printing an off-centered 14 x 21 inch print, 1/2" border all around, snuggled up just 1/2" from one of the 22" sides.  Now here's where it gets good...use the orphaned 2" section to print test strips for images you are still working on.  Piggybacking is old hat to roll users, but sheet-shovers usually take some nudging towards such multi-tasking techniques.

Which Canson Rag are you using?  Sounds like you like it.  I've been using Baryta luster papers for a long time and want to find a good gallery quality matte paper.  I hope my mk cartridge will still fire up.

I switched from Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 to Canson Rag Photographique 310, for the reasons outlined above. It is about $20 more expensive than the Hahnemühle in 24 x 36 inch sheets, but that isn't always that way. The Hahnemühle smooth rag is a little smoother than the Canson rag, the regular  Hahnemühle rag is the next smoothist after the Canson rag, and Canson BFK Rives has a slight surface texture, but not as much as a St. Cuthbert's Mill Velvet paper (Epson Velvet Fine Art, Epson Somerset Velvet, Moab Enhanced Velvet, Canon Velvet Fine Art, Breathing Color Elegance Velvet Platinum, etc).

I hope my mk cartridge will still fire up.

That has never been a problem for me. It is one of the annoyances of the 3880: accidently choose a printer with the wrong paper type (mat vs photo), and it will go ahead and change inks without any warning or question. Even if you turn it off or cancel the print job, it will continue to change inks once you turn it back on. A warning dialog would be nice, like: about to change from mk to pk, do you want to continue: yes or no? The 7890, 7990, 9890, and 9900 all manage to ask first.
