Which is the best price-value CF?
« on: December 03, 2012, 09:05:40 am »

Never know which one is the best value to buy for a 40 mega back.

Is there a difference between SanDisk and Lexar? The last one seem to be always cheaper.

Will I really notice a difference between a 60mb/s and a 90mb/s?

On offer at B&H:

SD 90mb/s 16 GB - 75 usd
SD 60mb/s 32 GB - 84 usd
Lx 60mb/s 2x 16 GB - 91 usd

The only backs that can take advantage of 90mb/s for capture/ edit/ focus check etc. are the Credo and IQ, so if you use one of those then I would recommend the faster cards. Faster cards can also be useful for transferring data with USB3 and/ or FW800 readers.

Personally I prefer several small cards over fewer+larger...

Hi Yair,

I have a H4D40. Should I go then for the 60mb/s or is the 30mb enough?

I recommend Sandisk, SanDisk is perhaps not cheap, but very good and in my opinion, almost indestructible. I would definitely recommend ExtrmePro - of course H4d40 use this speed. Buy the smallest that you can buy. In an emergency you will not lose all your photos  ;)

I like SanDisk, few issues if any.  I've had problems with Lexar cards in the past.

Hi,

I prefer to take care of my cards after each day of shooting. So the card should last in excess of one day of shooting but not for two days.

Best regards
Erik

 ::)  ;)

It's obvious that what Eric is saying is that he does not use a card more than a day
before copying the files to something else (laptop or computer).

I have always taken the same approach with any camera that has only one card slot
and does not allow for recording to two cards at the same time.
It's also important to keep in mind that cards can fail when connected to the computer to download the files.

I use San Disk and Lexar.

Little safety tip. Always touch a metal part of the camera before inserting a card and never
put a card into a camera without touching the camera. I have seen a camera go bad when an assistant
removed a card from a camera on a stand and before putting another back in he handled some wardrobe.
Must have generated some static electricity. A bit of a freak case for sure, but not fun.

A great product for MF backs would be a special Compact Flash card with a second piggy back card in it.
Like a CF card with a piggy back SD card. This would be a handy way to achieve redundancy. It could
be designed so that the piggy back card could not be formatted when in the CF card, but only if directly seated in
card reader.

That said CF cards are remarkably robust and I think the real problem is more about user error.

Fred,
It's also obvious how his name is spelled ....  just saying...   :o

All,
To me the bigger issue with the memory cards is the rampant counterfeiting of these cards.  It's important to inspect your cards carefully upon purchase.

True.

Easy solution is buy direct from the manufacturer.

For Phase backs I always used Sandisk and in recent years the Extreme Pros both 16 and 32. Never had a card issue in all 5 backs plus the bunch of loaners, demo units I have shot.
