D600 vs D800/700
« on: September 24, 2012, 12:31:36 pm »

I'm a very happy D700 owner who decided to pass on the D800.

The D600, however, intrigues me ...

Are there any features that the D700 has that the D600 doesn't?

For example, I know that there is no dedicated AF-ON button on the D600.

In the custom setting  an option in menu item f4 allows you to set  the Ae_l/AF-L lock to be set as a dedicated AF-On button

Five things the D600 doesn't have or allow for that the D700 and D800 do:
- Use of CompactFlash (CF) media
- No built in shutter in the viewfinder
- The D600 does not use the 10 port remote port connection Nikon has used since at lease the N90 (maybe the F4) to connect wired releases. Although not labled as such the GPS connection does allow for  conencting a wired release this but it requires a different cable.
- maximum shutter speed is 1/4000th and X-Sync speed (before you get into FP syncing) is 1/200th

Fewer AF points, though that isn't an issue for me, most of the time, no built-in eyepiece shutter (an easily lost piece of plastic instead), which is an issue, in particular for longer exposures.

Body, though weather-sealed, does not use an all metal frame. The lens mount bolts to a polycarbonate structure.
Missing the button controls of the D700 on the left top selector.

For many this is the "Goldilocks" camera - just right. I waited until it was announced, checked the specs, and then ordered the D800.
