Capture One 7 - I'm hearing it's coming very soon....
« on: September 23, 2012, 11:07:24 pm »

Wonder if anyone has heard anything regarding rumors that C1 7 will be out within a matter of weeks (or less).

Did you read some of the hints being dropped over on the other forum about something new coming soon? I'm hoping they were hinting about a new c1 and not some other new software.

I hope it's not a paid upgrade and they leave the current version still broken (5D III tethering in osx 10.8)
Time to install the free version of Lightroom I have if it is.

Which forum is that?
If someone is dropping hints, I sure hope they are in the know. :)

Saturday night I had dinner with a friend at a South Beach restaurant. He said he felt fairly confident that a new release was just a few weeks away based on what is being discussed by the local suppliers. Sometimes, I think all this "he said - she said" is wishful thinking, but more times that not there is a basic truth hidden somewhere in the message.

Canon's SDK that they provide to third party tethering software has not been updated to fully support 10.8. As soon as it is I'm sure it will be incorporated into Capture One. If that happens while version 6 is still shipping I'm sure it will be incorporated into that version.

As a side note re: loyalty to customers: LR3 was not updated with support for any of the new Canon/Nikon cameras; forcing customers to upgrade (and creating unfortunate situation where a customer's system could not handle LR4). Capture One 6 has provided support shortly after it came available from Canon/Nikon.

I've used Capture one since v.3 and every time the version number has incremented it has been a paid-for release. As is usually the case with software, the "dot" releases are free, but Capture One 7 - I'll bet pounds to pennies - will cost.

I agree that 7 is probably round the corner: Phase One has had a few sales/special offer pricing deals recently, which usually precedes a new release.

There is no secret here. Capture One upgrades have been $99/license (allows 2 computers) for many years. Updates are always free.

For those interested in the rather boring history of Capture One pricing:
Capture One 3 Pro was the exception. It was sold for many many years for $499 with "2 free upgrades". Phase One planned on making upgrades a 1-2 year cycle. But it took much longer to release Capture One 4 Pro (a complete rewrite with modern code). Anyone who paid for Capture One 3 Pro did not have to pay again through Capture One 5 Pro - for many customers that meant they did not pay for upgrades for 5+ years (while P1 was still paying to develop it). Because of this they decided to sell Capture One 4 Pro for $399 ($100 less) but without free upgrades associated with that purchase. Later the price was reduced to $299 (clear pricing pressure from Adobe LR) where it has been selling quite well. Lately there have been a string of promotions that reduce the price by varying amounts.

Also, anyone who made a purchase right before an upgrade has been given the upgrade for free. For instance if you bought Capture One 5 Pro two weeks before Capture One 6 Pro was released they gave you the upgrade for free.

Even if you're shooting a mid-tier dSLR if you shoot tethered or care at all about image quality and workflow speed then the cost of Capture One software (even with every update) is a very very small % of your equipment/software costs. Considering that for many photographers the software is where you are 50%+ of their total imaging time this seems to me to be the best ROI in photo spending.

Historically you've always been able to buy from a handful of dedicated dealers like us (Digital Transitions) for 5-10% less than from Phase One direct, in which case you gain phone/in-person support of that dealer for questions/issues/feature-requests in addition to retaining the email/online support of Phase One. I don't expect that to change whenever the next upgrade to Capture One is released.

And of course no one is forced to upgrade. If they bring enough to the table regarding new features, improvements, refinements etc to justify the cost then you will - if not, you won't.

Thanks Doug,

I have always found C1's upgrades to be worth the price.  Anything that makes for better, cleaner and better color images is a no brainer.

Simon, you and me both.  ;D

One of the things I REALLY miss (when I had the P45+), was shooting interiors live tethered to C1 on a 15" Macbook Pro. The camera LCD works, but just not the same mojo.  ;)

Hoping that Phase One has cracked the Fujifilm X-Pro 1 RAW's secret code...

DPReview posted an announcement of C1 v7 on their news page today/tonight and then quickly pulled it off... replacing with DxO v8.

I did not care to read the pulled announcement - but it seems to me that price quoted there for C1 Pro was low... probably P1 wants to align that closer to LR price levels

At this very moment, there is a teaser ad on the front page of the Phase One website, promising a revolution in image quality.  We shall see if they can live up to their own hype.

Hmm.. a revolution is a big mouthful. I'd be happy with less if they have made a good RAW converter for Fujis cameras with the X-Trans sensor... one that is on par with the cameras processing .. that would be a small revolution.
