Uniform border on Epson 3800 with matte paper?!
« on: August 08, 2012, 03:51:43 am »

I usually print with Luster and use the Auto Sheet Feeder but am experimenting with matte (Moab Entrada Rag) tonight and no matter what I do, they print with a uniform border around the images.  It is putting a slightly larger than 0.75" border uniformly around them.  I'm using the front feeder.  I created a blank new document at 8.5 x 11 and sized my images to 10" wide and pasted them in, so in theory, they should have a 0.5" margin on the sides and vary according to height as usual. I've tried checking and unchecking "Center Image" and "Scale to fit media" in every combination but it always prints with this uniform border.

Any clue what I'm doing wrong here?  Thanks in advance for any advice!

Screen shot of my settings attached.

Front feeder is not borderless. It will have borders of .79-.79-.12-.12.(PS)
If you want equal borders using the front feeder you have to set all 4 sides to .79. No borderless.
You can get borderless using the manual rear feed.
In Lightroom it shows you all this very nicely on the screen. You may have to click zoom to fill if any white edges show in the print preview to get a borderless print.

In Lightroom and Photoshop when you do your page setup if you hover your cursor over US Letter it will show you the borders for that selection.
For example .79,.79,.13,.13.(LR) for front feed. 0,0,0,0 for borderless manual rear feed.

Thanks, Dan. I assume .79 is inches?  It looks like you are saying that I should be getting smaller borders on either the top and bottom but I'm getting them uniform by default.  In any case, I don't want it to stretch my image in any way from the dimensions I've got it in PS (10" x 7.16") so it would appear I'm out of luck with the front feeder?  I was using it for the Moab Entrada because I seem to have lost the rear paper guide for the printer   :(

Yes that was inches.
Guess we need a Photoshop printing guru to step in.
Do not want to throw you a curve with Lightroom info if you do not use it.

Since I do my final adjustments in PS, it never made sense to me to save the file somewhere, import it back into LR and print from there. Right, or are there advantages I'm missing?

Does anyone know if using the front feeder, I can get the image to appear on the paper at the dimensions of my file in PS?  It keeps giving me a uniform border no matter what I try.

Thanks!

The print module in Lightroom ia as good as it gets.
In my opinion it puts photoshop to shame.

Yes you are missing a lot.
I do 99% of pp in Lightroom. For the occasional trip to Photoshop you right click edit in Photoshop.
Do your edit work then click the x and save image. It goes automatically back to Lightroom with your edits intact.
Dig in to the Lightroom videos here at Lu La. They are the best.

Ok, after much experimentation and a fortuitous location of my rear feeder sheet guide (!) and a fair bit of wasted paper (thank goodness it's double sided, the matte) I've figured it out.  I think you were right about the front loading automatically putting uniform borders around the image. With the rear manual slot, I'm able to get the original dimensions of the image in the 8.5 x 11 file I've created in PS. Maybe there are different ways, but if I uncheck Scale to fit media and leave Center image checked, it works. Attaching an image of my settings in case that helps anyone in the future.

I played around with Lightroom briefly tonight but didn't get as far as printing.  Interesting points but I'm often working with an already saved PSD file that isn't in LR so I'd still have to import that then click on Edit in PS like you suggest.  Also, it seems there are less control options.  For instance, it just says "Black point compensation will be used for this print" without giving you the option to turn it off like in PS.  I've read (here, for instance - a very useful guide to printing - http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/printworkflow.html) that is should be turned off with Perceptual and turned on with Relative Colormetric. Now, I haven't taken the time, effort, paper and ink to test that but it's nice to have the option, I'd think. Maybe I'll play around with it when I've got more time but thanks for your input and advice, Dan - much appreciated!

That's what most do now, the LR print module is fantastic. If you open the file into Photoshop from Lightroom and then just "save" it in Photoshop (not save as), it will be saved next to the original and LR will already be aware of it's existence.  You can even tweak that file with the develop module to fine tune it ...

Personally I always open my files into Photoshop as smart objects so I can always fine tune my adjustments with ACR. It also makes it much easier to do non destructive creative sharpening that has a mask.  Once I get done in PS, I save, go back to LR and print.  I haven't printed from Photoshop for a very long time now.
