Wide Leica lens on Sony Nex 7?
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:35:21 am »

I need a really sharp lens for arial photography.
Anybody tried any Leica 18mm or 21mm on a Sony Nex 7 ?

Sony 16/2,8 is not sharp enough.
Sigma 19/2,8 is sharp but a bit soft in the edges.

Regards.

Sorry I have not tried the Leica's on my Nex 7 but the 21mm Zeiss is just stunning.
Might save you several thousand dollars too.

Is that a ZM 21mm Dan? If so, do you get color shifts in the corners?

Thanks,

It's a ZF.2 attached with the Novaflex adapter on the Nex.
I purchased it primarily for use on my D800E but think it spends more time on the 7.
Weight is 600g and can say at least at this point no color shift issues.
Is it a little big for the Nex,sure it is but the images are just wow. I do a fair amount of panos shot from tripod and the whole size weight thing is a non issue at least for me.

I'm using the exact same setup as Dan. With the crop factor it works out to 31mm. The new Zeiss 15 is said to be stellar but whoo-whee pricey. You might try a Nikon 20, its supposed to be decent, but imo the ZF Zeiss 21 is the way to go.
Absolutely don't waste your money on one of the Leica M WA's, according to testing by Lloyd Chambers it would not be pretty! His is a pay site, but you can read a little about it on his blog if you go back several months.

The Nikon 20/2,8 has very soft corners :-(

Not sure you would see those on cropped frame.

So the consensus is that M mount lenses aren't performing well on this camera? It's a shame as it seems like it would be the perfect body for M lenses.

Steve, the M lenses perform great, just not the WA's. I think it has to do with the sensor itself. Leica uses a sensor that is slightly curved on the ends. Somehow with WA's there is too much coverage of the lens versus the sensor hence you get color shading and other weird anomylies. The lenses will mount and shoot as regular - you're just not going to get the expected results. Lloyd Chambers did  exhaustive testing on his site diglloyd.com. It's a pay site but well worth it if you are shooting one of the newest camera bodies. MR also commented on the same problem. Just go back and read his mini-episodic tome on the NEX-7.
And yes, it is a PITA!

Remember that even the M9 has major color shift issues if you disable the internal software correction for each lens.  The biggest difference with the M9 is the lack of an AA filter, which, like the GXR, creates less astigmatism with the highly angled light rays at the edges of the sensor.  Either way, CornerFix or Capture One can take care of the NEX-7's color shift.

Hi,

The microlenses on the NEX-7 are not intended to use with symmetrical wide angle lenses. The best way to achieve decent performance is probably to use wide angles calculated for DSLRs. The NEX-7 can take almost any lens with adapters. The best retrofocus wide angle around seems to be the Zeiss 21/2.8, but others may be useful.

The 24MP APS-C sensor would be very demanding on any lens.

Pity that Sony make few first class lenses for the NEX. The Zeiss 24/1.8 may be a very good one. Another option may be to use a 16-80/3.5-4.5 Zoom or possible a 20/2.8, boy with an adapter. But these combinations are bigger and heavier than what you have on mind.

Best regards
Erik Kaffehr

Hi, this thread might be of interest:

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/229390-nex-7-summicron.html

The 7 is one fine camera. (I've got two) Some wide angle lenses that weren't designed for this camera/sensor are problematic because of unwanted color shift but still, there's an almost infinite choice of (adapted) lenses available.

BTW the Leica M WATE seems to do just fine on the NEX 7.

Hi,

The microlenses on the NEX-7 are not intended to use with symmetrical wide angle lenses.

Kind of defeats the purpose of a compact for me. If I'm going to have to carry around SLR lenses, may as well bring a D800 or 5D3 along with them ;-)

Seems like the M9 still has no competitors with WA lenses (which is what I use 75% of the time).

Hi,

The lenses Sony makes work fine with the NEX-7, but Sony has unfortunately only a few lenses and most are not very good. The original poster is much interested in finding wide angle  lenses that are good into corners, and it seems those are hard to find.

The Leica M9 has offset microlenses and software to correct the lens cast.

Best regards
Erik

The 24/1,8 is very good, as is the Sigma 19/2,8 .....in the middle.
If the Sigma was as sharp of center as in center it would be a stellar one for a real bargin price!

(Lenses weighing more than 300g I´d rather not use)

Regards.
