Lightroom 4 images stored on Nas...anyone have experience?
« on: June 20, 2012, 08:12:49 pm »

Ok so I am thinking about consolidating to one machine. I am going to go with a new Macbook Pro using wifi while on the road and upstair and the ethernet adapter when in my office. My goal is to store all my images on the NAS but keep image cache and the catalog on the local drive (SSD). I know through wifi I am not going to have super fast speeds but from what I have read the higher end NAS devices through a 1G Ethernet can reach 100MB/sec. Does anyone here have any experience with this? If so is it useable?

That is how I have it setup. I get about 60mb/sec sometime bursts of 80mb/sec. But that is on a 2.2Ghz/2mB NAS in RAID 5.
There maybe more in the section about DAM management.

This is more or less the same setup I have as well. Works well. I have a QNAP TS-859 Pro+, works well and I get ~70-80 mb/sec in RAID 6 mode. This have the ability to combine 2 1GB ethernet ports to the switch if you run several machines and want higher bandwidth, but with only one machine with one 1GB port you will not benefit from that.

100MB over 1G is optimistic as noted.

I'm using an older QNAP 409 w/ a 2009 vintage iMac.

The dual ethernet channel bonding is a good thing but only if the switch also has that feature (which is not usually seen on consumer level (read: cheapest) switches.  Take a look at the Netgear 108T Prosafe Smart Switch
