24mm tse Lii and 1.4 ii or iii
« on: June 19, 2012, 03:09:51 am »

Hi Forum

I have searched not only here, but also the net looking for side by side comparisons for this combo. Usually it is the older 24 and 1.4 converter that i find.
If anyone has done this comparison would they be able to post me some 100% crops of strategic areas of the image, or if they are happy to you, send me the large files. Just your backyard test shots will be fine, as long as the lighting is good it will tell the story.

I would appreciate some help on this.

Thanks
Karl

If you want side-by-side of test chart shots "the digital picture" has a lot of them.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=486&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=3&API=0&LensComp=486&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=1&APIComp=1

In the above link you have a comparison with the TS-E 24 II using 1.4x II and 1.4x III

Canon has really good teleconverters, I think the version III are totally worth it. Those extenders are really powerful on tele lenses too of course. Canon's system of tele lenses and teleconverters is performing really well compared to the competition.

Thanks for this.  I was aware of the comparison, but did not realise that the drop down menu contained both the version ii and iii, so that was interesting to see.

the Canon TS-E 17/4L and TS-E 24/3.5L are probably among the very best of modern EF lenses, and frankly, very reasonable priced or even slightly under priced compare to other L lenses. just recently upgraded my 1.4XII to 1.4XIII, coupled with 17 and 24mm, very very good results.

do you need the extenders on the 17? they will give you a 24 and 33mm (roughly) equivalent, 33 is also 24+1.4 is there a quality difference between the 2 ways of getting 33mm?
i'm interested as i'm selling my 45 tse and intending to use a 1.4+24mm to get a more useful to me 33mm equiv F.O.V

thanx for comments thus far.

i have the 17 tse, beautiful lens with gr8 quality.  off topic - i use it for architecture and have taped the focus to the sweet spot for f11 as it is such a fiddle to focus it quickly using the live view when you have a lot of twilight images to take.  the other problem is that it is easy to move it out of focus when adjusting filters etc.  for near and far scenic using tilt when you can perhaps slow things down, it would be better to adjust it manually.

on topic - i would not use the 2x with the 17 or with any tse lens.  the 1.4 though seems to be a v good match and from what i have heard, good iq.  i purchased the 45 from b&h, tested it and then sent it back.  just not what i wanted.  the 24 + 1.4 is more what i am looking for as well.

In my testing the 1.4x was not desirable at all on the 17.

The 24 TSE is a fabulous sharp optic.   17 + extender does not come anywhere near this.

However 24TSE is so good, it can still look pretty good with the 1.4 extender.  There is no 35 in the Canon range, so its hobsons choice.

In practice, though I take the 1.4x out with me on every shoot I end up doing nearly everything on the 17 and the 24
