Lightroom 4 delete files issue (using a Mac)
« on: June 14, 2012, 08:25:20 am »

Hopefully the attachment will show a screen grab. I've just loaded about 32gb worth of images from my external drive to Lightroom 4. Then I've gone through them and X'd all the rubbish, Apple/Delete normally gives me the option to move them all to the trash and delete from the drive but for some reason I get this message (attachment). As you can see I'm offered the choice to 'permanently delete files' but this doesn't actually do anything.

Does anyone know why this might be, i'm beginning to think it must be a L4 issue as this never happened with L3.

Just an observation, I tried to rename the files upon upload to L4, Lightroom would NOT let me rename all the files. Strangely enough it's these unnamed files that won't delete.

Harassed.  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Yup seen that. There is an invisible folder on the desktop of that drive called .Trashes. Trash that, should fix the issue. You’ll need setup the finder (or use a utility) to see the invisible file to then trash.

DO NOT DO THIS.  If you delete the .Trash folder (in your home directory), or the .Trashes directory (at the root of the boot volume), you won't have a trash anymore.  Stuff you attempt to delete will be immediately removed, with no trash existing.

If you want to force delete stuff that's in the trash, you can go there via command line and delete the files in the trash folder.  DO NOT delete the Trash folders themselves.

I finally discovered that if you click on an image then hit command I or File Get info there is a box which if it's ticked lock only allows you to READ, and NOT READ AND WRITE.

I don't know how this has happened to roughly half my 1tb's worth of images, now I have to go through about 500gb's worth of files individually and uncheck the locked box.

Unless anyone knows a way of unticking boxes automatically ???

Come to think of it does anyone know why this has happened in the first place.

Thanks

If you're comfortable with a little of terminal work:

- In the Terminal, type exactly (without the quotes):  "chflags -R nouchg "
- Note that there is a space after nouchg
- Then drag the folder containing your images in the terminal window. This should append the path of the folder to the chflags -R nouchg  command
- Press return or enter

The command should look like: mymac:~ sanfairyanne $ chflags -R nouchg  /Volumes/ImageBank/myImageFolder

(assuming that your files are stored on a hd named ImageBank and in a folder named myImageFolder

Let me know if it helps

Funny, I ran into this problem (Locked set for a folder full of files).  I was able to select them all in Finder, do Get Info, then click the Locked checkbox a couple of times until it was blank.

Yes that's exactly right, I hope you worked that out quicker than I did, it took me a full day of faffing about.

I saw this same issue when trying to delete some .jpg images from Lightroom. My fix was to find the images in Finder and delete them from there, which worked fine for me. I've only seen this issue with one batch of images I had downloaded from an email. I went through Lightroom deleting a few more useless images, most all of them .dng or .tiff, and had no more encounters with this issue.
