color noise reduction_problem
« on: June 09, 2012, 11:55:07 pm »

Hi,
I'm using capture one 6.3.3 with P65+, flash V2 profile, iso 50, sinar 4 by 5, schneider digitar 100 lens for still-life settings. I'm processing the files with Prophoto-16 bit, and working with the 16 bit tiff images in photoshop with ProPhoto setting.
When I shoot a saturated dark red object, for example red peppers, the preset color noise reduction, 34, seems to ruin the smooth color transition in the dark red area. The best color noise setting was zero, "0", where the transition is best. I guess that in this setting of zero, I'm not using  any color noise reduction-function.
Is this a normal behavior of this software?
Do I need to adjust the color noise setting number each time depending on the colors and tones of an image?
I think I only had the problems in the dark red color areas. Are there any other concerns regarding the color noise reduction?
Let me hear some opinions...

Thanks in advance!

This is the reason I keep all of C1's NR set to Off by default. It may be normal but it sure ain't right.  Reds are always the worst offender and they often end up posterized and plastic looking with the factory default options. It's much easier to process out a tiff and run some selective Color NR on that in Ps later on - and more effective as well.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know that people are controlling the noise in Photoshop.(My quick test shows me that the noise control of Ps is a little different from Capture One. I might need to do more tests to figure out the better way...)
Color noise is a little difficult to understand...
And not easy to figure out which are real colors_textures and which are noises.
I think that color noise setting of Capture One is an example where automatic setting fails when there are darker reddish colors in an image.
I thought, at ISO 50, I don't need to worry about noise, but it seems that it's not the case.
I also guess that the software team of Capture One knows about this issue. Obviously( still my guess) they don't openly want to let us know about it. Of course, dark reddish colors are, kind of, rare in images.

I have no idea of what they're aware of in Denmark, but they've never taken any of my suggestions to heart. I use both Photoshop and Noise Ninja for noise reduction, but when I'm in Ps, I do not use their NR filters. I generally use blurring and alternate blending modes, applied selectively - particularly for color noise.

Strangely but Moire suppression tool also removes colour noise nicely (and can be used locally)

Capture One 7 greatly improves color noise reduction. Effort was put into this based on user feedback like this thread.
