Leica lens "3d pop"
« on: May 28, 2012, 11:13:45 pm »

I often hear that leica and zeiss lenses have a 3d pop to them that other lenses do not have. Doe anyone have example images shot of the same subject with a leica and non leica lens that shows this effect taking place ? I also hear zeiss lenses have this 3d pop aspect to them as well....

I believe the legendary 3d pop is probably the result of 2 things:
- the micro contrast of the lens + the level of control of aberations,
- the spread of focus around plane of sharpness + quality of bokeh

All these contribute to enhancing the gap between the sharp areas of the image and the rest, which makes images pop.

I didn't do any comparison to validate this though.

Cheers,
Bernard

Knowing that you paid $7000 for a lens, might pop a few things in your brain, but seriously there is something about them.

These are all pleasing to look at with smooth bokeh. I like C the most for the focus right where my eye would go, the front of the centre ring. The slightly wider DoF shows off most of the flower detail. D would be my 2nd pick for the same focus point with more OOF. A,B the focus is further back. It starts where the flower is cut in half.  E,F are a nice rendering with a bit of a pale, flat look. Reduced color? contrast? You are testing us with more than just the look of the lens.

E and F shot later in the day with more diffuse light
A and B focused differently probably because the length of th 2 lenses at 90mm is different but I was liveview focusing at the front of the center. C and D focus was easy with the 100mm macro
