It's not more resolution that they really need (although it would be useful), but greater dynamic range. Even with my 5D Mark II I found that resolution tended to be limited by optics, depth of focus, or atmospheric conditions as often as not.

I second Chris on this one - DR is the real go.

More megapixel helps DR

Both the D3X and D800
have way more DR than D3,D3s and D4

I thought it was the opposite....
but it seems to help!

Quality of color and dynamic range are paramount, but megapixels is also very important for some applications. The D800 seems to be the one to beat in all categories at the moment. I am buying one for architectural and landscape work until Canon makes a similar high MP body. If they don't, then I will probably move back to Nikon for all my work, just to keep from carrying two systems with me on jobs.

I think Canon dropped the ball and got too sidetracked with video. But maybe that's where the money is from a corporate standpoint.

I'm not sure whether or not your post is meant to be entirely serious.

Certainly the conventional wisdom is that all other things being equal, larger pixels give lower noise and better DR. Obviously in this case all other things are not equal - the D3X and D800 sensors obviously use technology that allows them to have better DR than most other cameras despite having smaller pixels. I doubt that the DR of Canon's sensors would improve if they just increased the pixel density without changing anything else.

Yes larger pixel helps low light
but if you think about the same generation tech
D4/D800 state quiet the opposite in terms of DR

same thing was with the D3s/D3X

...strange
