5D mk3 with C1 Pro
« on: April 04, 2012, 07:01:09 pm »

does anyone know how long it typically takes phase one to support new cameras like the canon 5d mk3? I have one and am lost without being able to use C1 Pro. Has anything been announced regarding the next update?

This is only a guess, but Ver7.  Capture One Pro is now at 6.3.5 and has a 60 day trial instead
of the normal 30.  I am assuming that the extended trial period is to possibly bridge over to
Capture One Pro Vr 7.  I used to be on their beta list but must have fallen off as I have not seen any invitations to test Vr. 7 and it's supposed to be a big update.

Best bet is to open a tech question on their support site and see if they will give you an
offical timeline.

Same question for the D800...

Although LR has progressed a lot, I may still like the rendering/colors of C1 Pro a tad better... but that it mostly irrelevant if the camera I currently use is not supported.

I really hope they have not wasted resources with local editing, PS will always be better for this. Best in class demoisaicing, colors, shadow/highlight control and sharpening are the key aspects in my book.

Cheers,
Bernard

Seriously, Bernard, Lightroom - especially Lightroom 4 - knocks Capture One into the middle of next week on all those points. It's the colours, and only the colours, that continue to let Capture One stand out.

Capture One 6 was released in December 2010, as I recall, so it may be a bit early to expect v.7.    I have always felt that C1 produces superior results to ACR/LR, and we shall see if that continues to be the case with the next major release.  I have not tested LR4, so I don't know if rendering characteristics have been significantly improved from v3.5, which I found to be dull and flat.

In any case, there can be no doubt that Capture One wants to hang on to users upgrading to the latest high-end cameras, which means that support for those cameras should be forthcoming shortly.

LR4 works very well, no doubt. I need to work more to find te ultimate combination of settings.

We'll see what happens with D800 files.

Besides, I hear that Raw Developper will support the d800 from end if April. DxO hopefully soon also. I have found that DxO produces very nice tones since V7 as well as much better sharpening compared to earlier versions.

Cheers,
Bernard

RPP is the best raw convertor, without a doubt, but it almost always requires a secondary photo editor, such as Photoshop.  This is not a problem for me, as I like working in PS and have the time to do it, but many photographers are looking for a single comprehensive program that can handle 95% of their work.  Hence, the popularity of programs such as Lightroom and Aperture.

Is there a RPP for dummies document somewhere?

Like "the smartest workflow and best basic settings to start from"?

Thanks.

first of all - it has a PDF manual (in English) included (albeit some details there might not be up to date)...  if you do not mind to use translate.google.com (or similar service) you can find most of the questions answered in http://raw-rpp.livejournal.com ( I suggest just to start from the very beginning = http://raw-rpp.livejournal.com/427.html and read postings/comments one by one - it is as valuable as reading the manual, even if you have to use a computer translation) or you can start a topic (in a proper section) and we shall answer your questions - there are people here who are using RPP... you can ask your questions in http://groups.google.com/group/raw-photo-processor/topics?gvc=2 - it is monitored by the author and he will answer there quite promptly, but it is not as alive as http://raw-rpp.livejournal.com

so if you, by any chance, decide (and that I think is a must to learn how to work w/ RPP) to read the rpp community journal here are some hints, as to which (authors) postings worth to pay more attention :

user hardloaf = Andrey Tverdokhleb, the (original) author of RPP

user sail2ithaki = Iliah Borg, he works together w/ Andrey Tverdokhleb on many aspects of RPP

user pavel_kosenko and user dmitry_novak = local rpp evangelists  :)

user alextutubalin = Alex Tutubalin, of libraw (http://www.libraw.org) and rawdigger (http://www.rawdigger.com)

Try this: http://tinyurl.com/dydrsnh

I like specially the KR64 emulation (It was my main film when I started in photography, longtime ago...)
