WTB- expensive looking broken cameras needed
« on: March 21, 2012, 05:30:37 pm »

There is a big theft problem in my neighborhood where people are rummaging through cars looking for stuff, and I would like to bait the thieves with expensive looking camera equipment so I can figure out who is actually going around doing all the stealing. The camera does not need to work any in possible way, as long as a thief might think it looks valuable is all I need, espcially Canon or nikon gear. Since this camera is pretty much going to be "expendable" I am looking for something cheap. Let me know if you have anything that fits the bill.

Somewhat off topic but a little related, I don't know if anyone on here remember but I had tons of my medium format gear stolen right out of my house back in September, so I am hoping I might be able to find my original equipment aswell by doing this.

Only a few blocks from where I live in San Francisco there is a mixed neighborhood with nice homes and project houses.  You'll often see kids walking in pairs one on either side of the street just walking down and looking into every car.  It seems like it shouldn't be so hard to catch them, but apparently more difficult that it seems. The police did use bait on some occasions but it always turns into some kind of lawsuit.
Good luck, but it might be easier to just go out and tell them to move on.

Yeah that is true. I have a strong feeling though that the kids doing it live a few houses down from me, but I don't know, if I can at least find out who it is, I may be able to at least make better choices on where to park, what hours of the day or whatever to be most on the look out.

Bug it with a cheap GPS locator. Preferably stuffed into the film compartment... Should be enough for a warrant.
