The Nikon D800 looks good!
« on: February 07, 2012, 03:16:02 pm »

This is the first camera which has made me think about using it instead of my Canons.

Mainly because the focus is better than the weak 9-point system in the 5D2. And now finally Nikon has something high resolution is a sub-$8k camera ;-)

I'm hoping Canon gets their act together with a sensor that is the equal of this one!

I agree it does look good.  Makes me glad that I made a decision to upgrade my lenses and not my cameras a few years back.  I will wait to see how much is resolution rather than extra data.  Initial images released look good.  Fits my shooting style better then the D4 and is a lot cheaper.  I am in no rush to buy so I can let the upgrade crazies do some research for me in the real world.

These are only jpegs, but a few of them are pretty stunning.

This one in particular looks great IMO:

Does anyone know if there are any recent articles comparing the Nikon D800 and D800e?

The D800 seems like a croppers wet dream with respect to the 36 MP sensor?

Yes. And also there are benefits that accrue  if you use the full frame, keeping  the pixel dimensions the same (7360 x 4912) and instead of making a 20.444 x 13.644 inch print @ 360 dpi, making a smaller print.

Hi,

Canon will respond to the D800/D800E in their own way. Rumor is 3/3 2012 right now.

The 5DII had little competition for long, and Canon probably didn't upgrade it in order of avoiding cannibalization of their 1DsIII business. Now the rules have changed, with the 5DII looking old.

But Canon will not be a D800 copy, it will be some kind of amalgam of existing Canon technologies.

My guess is: better AF, better sealing but no great improvement in DR at low ISO.

By the way, pricing on the Nikon is quite aggressive, may cause competition some sleepless nights.

Best regards
Erik

I have a feeling the quality of the photo will still come down to the user.....

Yes, that's right. I've seen the D800 advertised for CHF 2680 (VAT included) which translates roughly to $2975 or € 2215.

That's crazy talk. More pixels means better photos. Everyone knows that. ;)

I thought you were going to say "or the viewing distance".

I'll place a bet that Canon has been sitting on something big for a while and they've been waiting for the most opportune time to release it. It's pointless for a company like these to release their best hands when not needed and now that Nikon has well and truly caught up I think that time has come.

now that Nikon has well and truly caught up I think that time has come.

Nikon didn't have any catching-up to do. What they have done now is created a better differentiation between models.

The D3s always outshone the 5D2 but was more expensive. The D700 matched the 5D2 in everything except megapixels.

Now Nikon have introduced the D800 and the D4 which, in very different ways, take the full-frame choice for serious amateur photographers several steps forward and retained the D700 as a third option.

I suspect that Canon will not (for the time being) attempt to out-resolve the D800 but will aim their much-forecast 5D3 at a mid-point between D800 and D4, concentrating, perhaps, on addressing some of the problems of their older model.

But hey! Both Nikon and Canon produce great cameras that can produce image quality that was only available in medium format a few years ago. As most amateur photographers have much more money tied up in lenses and accessories than in camera bodies, I can't see many jumping ship. I think that the magazines that are predicting a mass defection from Canon to Nikon have simply got that wrong.

I wasn't being exclusive to last models and as I said, they have well and truly caught up. I'm talking the last decade or more which EOS has had a stronger foothold. All those photos of banks of journalists at sporting events and 99% of lenses being white...those days are over.

Now that Canon have issued the specification of the new 5D, it looks as if I was right to suggest that they are looking at a very different market segment compared to the D800.

Where's that from? It's not on Canon's website, that I can find.
