Topic: How many Leica S2 cameras are in use right now? (Read 12183 times)

Everybody seem to like the handling, the design and obviously the lenses.

But I have never seen anybody use them ! None show up on Ebay.

If I ask a dealer, nobody seem to have sold more than 2-3 pieces since the introduction.

Is this correct?

Any insight here?

You won't find them on ebay because (a) the owners really, really like them and aren't going to
sell them; (b) Leica has limited the number produced so they sell quickly and yes, no particular
dealer has been allocated very many. That said, there are some dealers who clearly have sold
many and are premier dealers because of their knowledge and service, e.g. Dale Photo and Digital
in Florida.

dunno about S2 but according to this list James does have a high-tech car equipped with tiny cameras on both sides so that they reflect what they capture on the other side, making it invisible to the human eye... a small reel-to-reel tape recorder hidden within a camera... an underwater camera capable of taking eight shots in darkness using an infra-red film... a geiger counter camera... a Minox B 8x11 Camera... A mini-camera imprinted with 007... Q-Branch Hot Air Balloon equipped with surveillance cameras to track various enemy movements. This is used in conjunction with Bond's TV Watch in which he can receive video signals from the balloon...ring containing a miniature camera...a small, animal-like remote controlled camera unit that can transmit audio/video from the head of the unit to a receptacle for the signal ...a camera that when put together became a sniper rifle that can be programmed to fire for only one person due to a scanner built into the grip ...Laser Polaroid Camera: when the flash is used on this camera, it shoots a laser. The pictures it takes are X-rayed...AND a nuclear bomb.

Dealers I've spoken to are suggesting 2-3 per month.

And I can tell that several dealers I know were complaining because they could have sold more if they had gotten them when the customers wanted them !
But I think this has improved now.

No, no comment; she's been using them since I first saw pix of her with cameras, and that was zonks ago; some folks with a bob to spend actually might spend it... also, other than during state visits, I don't believe they are allowed to accept 'gifts'... Of course, I will hereby do my patriotic bit and offer to be the substitute acceptor of such largess. Not just to keep you happy, of course, but because one day, Porsche might have a 911 with a gift ticket attached. Wouldn't that be nice for me?

The OP poses a good question which, unfortunately, I don't have the answer. I am approaching (in a week or so) the two year anniversary with my S2. I know there are many other S2 owners out there but I suppose the owners don't post on the forums often. I am living proof of that. I have been a long time member on this forum, but rarely post. Myself and the other S2 owners that I know are very happy with the camera and lenses.

a: totally true.
b: totally untrue - there is no deliberate limiting of product, they cannot make them any faster and the demand exceeds current production.

I have had my own S2 since the middle of 2010, and also have no intention of putting it on Ebay! I'm waiting for the 30mm to arrive in Australia along with all the other S2 users here.

I can believe this to be true for the Uk, CH and Germany. I am not sure how much they sell in the US.

What I "heard" is that Leica has sold more S2 than they had expected/planned.
I asked thatquestion myself before getting into this system because I wanted to make sure there is a future for the S-system before I would buy into that system and the answers I got from Leica made me confident that the S-system sells more than good enough that there will a future for it.
The other thing which made me confident is that I met a prof. photographer who has used just the S2 for months now (and a M9 with one lens) for reportage style photography in quite rough conditions and for demanding applications.
And of course the third (and most important thing) which convinced me was using the system for a long weekend.

I think we must not forget that there is a big gap between people using cameras and people writing in forums (which is just a very small/incremental part)
