The Fortress - Antarctica
« on: January 21, 2012, 01:48:37 am »

I have a write up on my Blog and at the Gura Gear Blog on this amazing iceberg, the photograph and some general photo ramblings :-)

I am still working on editing and processing the more than 13,000 frames I shot in Antarctica. I have so far uploaded a few to my website at www.jholko.com This shot can also be seen in slightly higher resolution on my site.

Thoughts and comments are welcome as always.

Cool image Josh. I like the clouds you caught. Do I detect from the small wake you were in the back of the zodiac? :)

Yes, that wake detracts from what would otherwise be a fine image. I'd suggest you go back & do it again. Properly, this time  :)

Great shot, well composed & exposed. 'Nuff said really.

I've read the description in your blog and what doesn't come across without some kind of reference is the truly massive size. Since you used a wide ts to remove the perspective distortion of looking up you've lost any visual clues as to the size.

I especially like the ice and snow juxtaposed with ocean. Excellent!

Agree, Wow! Only question, was the blue in the crevasses heightened in LR?

Thanks all.

No - no vibrance or saturation was added to this photograph - either globally or locally. The blues in the dark crevices are really that deep and intense. (Printing them is a little tricky :-)

I remember reading an essay on LL (by Mark Dubovoy?) explaining the blue colour of the 'bergs.

Josh, I also had a look at your website and really liked #5 of the Antarctica series. One question I have is that with so many photographers on a little boat it must be very difficult to get a unique image really different from everybody else shooting like mad and trying every permutation possible...?

Thanks. I am still processing and uploading; so those on my site are just the ones I have had time for so far.

Its an interesting observation and there is no doubt that I am seeing a lot of similar images appear in various places (which is fine and to be expected). However, it amazes me also how many different ones there are appearing. Often the slightest change in angle, focal length, aperture, shutter speed or a few seconds changes the light so much it just looks totally different. I would say overall that more look different than alike. I did use my 17mm TSE a lot - a lot of my reasoning was to be 'different'. I also used a 10 stop ND filter for shot #5 Green Ice and Pebbles. To my knowledge I was the only one on the trip with a 17mm TSE and a 10 stop ND.

Excellent image...Bold dominating, atmospheric image, the monochromatic sky further adds impact; the cold blues, the detail and the aspects of the burg just below the water... superb powerful image, very well done.
