Waiting for the next wave
« on: November 22, 2011, 12:39:51 pm »

I've seen the term 'slashing light' applied to high contrast scenes with hard light and dark shadows.  This is an attempt to use the contrast in the composition.

I like it! The long exposure give a surreal feel to the waves.

Apart from the black area in the lower right, I like it very much.

Thanks much for the comments.

Jeremy - on my monitor the lower right has a hint of structure.  I find it very difficult to retain subtle variations in the low tones in reduced scale web displays.
Cheers.

I agree with Jeremy about lightening the LR corner a bit.  Very fine image otherwise.

Sorry, folks, but I think that the dark area could, if anything, be extended. I rather like the suggestion of a border within the image itself - there is no need for this common obsession I see of every little section having to be fully revealing of itself and boastful of a DR beyond human understanding; magical mystery tours are better than a straight ticket to Piccadilly Circus. Ask any woman if you don't believe me; suggestion is far nicer than nudity.

Me too. I would, however, quibble with the shadow on the left: it doesn't seem to be part of the story. Otherwise I like it lots.

I wonder what the same critics would make of Michael's Dawn Fog, the Front Page of this site today...

I can see a little structure in it as well, but it still doesn't look to me as if it should be there at all. Still, you're obviously not the only one to think that it's OK, so we can just agree to differ. There isn't a right answer, but perhaps you could try lightening it and see what you think.

I love it: it's obvious what the dark area at the bottom actually is, it's clearly appropriate that it be there and it anchors the whole photo.

Since it's a drink made from lawyers, that's hardly suprising.
