Another Newbie question
« on: November 17, 2011, 12:19:10 pm »

As a new user to LR3 I've been trying to set up my Preferences but am unsure about the advantages and disavantages of setting "Treat jpeg files next to raw files as separate photos" in the General tab of preferences. I'd appreciate any help/suggestions as to the whether to check or uncheck it.
Thanks in anticipation.

If you shoot raw AND jpeg with your camera then check it and LR will display the raw file wth the jpeg following.

You can still check it even if you shoot raw OR jpeg, only the file recorded will show. Even if it is checked the jpeg embedded in all raws will not show

In other words it won't hurt anything if it is checked. Mine is checked and I haven't shot any raw AND jpeg since I got the camera.

To amplify what Rich said.

If you shoot raw + jpeg, and check that box, you end up with 2 copies of all your pictures in the grid view: both the jpeg file and the raw file are displayed.  If you leave this unchecked, you'll see only the raw file, labeled (in LR) as raw+jpeg. The documentation says the jpeg gets imported as a "sidecar," but to be honest I can't figure out what  this really means, since LR doesn't actually seem to do anything with the jpeg at all.

My personal solution to this issue is simply always to shoot raw without jpeg. That way I don't get confused with double versions of images in LightRoom. And, as others have indicated, you don't lose anything.

As far as I am aware, the only reason to shoot RAW+Jpeg is so that you have an instantly usable (i.e., processed) image if you need to put one on the web within minutes of taking it.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my appeal for help, as always, forum members are great at helping fellow members. I shoot with Raw & jpeg, don't quite trust my raw processing skills in LR3, and will take the advice of leaving it unchecked, saves confusion.
Thanks again. :)
