Does it make sense to trade my Nikon D90 for a D3100?
« on: November 06, 2011, 10:42:40 pm »

I am mostly interested in the fact that the D3100 is much lighter and features full HD video capabilities.  Should I sell my D90 before it gets too old and buy the D3100 body, or save up for the upgrade to a D7000?

Agree. Besides the D90 is one of the best cameras that Nikon have created. By best I mean conformity with specs and quality. It has a excellent  dynamic range and have a motor for using some lenses that are good and cheep but don't have a motor. Also there is the issue of  manual control.

The D7000 is very good.  A great update to the D90. More incidents of problems with it, but for this moment the camera is mature and they have been, for the most part, ironed.

So my recommendation: Keep saving for the D7000. Even if it take a some time.

Best regards,

James

I agree with the above, the D90 is a solid camera. Nothing wrong with it. D3100 would really be a downgrade from this. Save for a D7000 or a D700. You'll be happier. Avoid the D300s its a very good camera, but its strange.

If weight and video are the features that are most important to you, then you should get the camera that best fits your needs.  The D90 is a much better camera for photography as it's more customizable, and has important features such as a second control dial, AF motor, and wireless flash commander.  But if none of that is important to you then it shouldn't be considered.  If the D3100 has the video features that the D90 lacks, and that's what's important, then make the switch.
