Slow Magic Wand

PS CS5, 3 year old iMac w/OS 10.6.8. Fairly large files from a 5dII. Getting lots of slow response when using the Magic Wand. Also, sometimes get slow response when using a large brush on a mask. Any ideas? Neither RAM nor CPU seem to be maxing out when this happens.

Have you checked your memory and scratch disk settings on PS? The ideal scratch disk should not be the OS disk, should be fast and must have room for the scratc files.
An almost full OS hard drive can cause that also.
