Sony NEX-5N Field Review
« on: October 20, 2011, 07:32:37 pm »

Michael has posted his latest on the Sony NEX-5N.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony_nex_5n_field_review.shtml

User reports have been quite enthusiastic as well. For good or bad this camera plus what is known about the NEX-7 have certainly raised my expectations for the 7 and I do have one on order for whenever that day might be. I've been thinking I should buy a 5N and EVF rather than wait for the uncertain delivery of the 7 but maybe it'll be too late soon.

With respect to the 5N I am particularly interested in the performance of M mount lenses on the camera. I wonder if there is a focal length where the use of cornerfix or other software remedies for vignetting isn't generally needed when shooting at or near wide open? 35mm and up? 50mm and up?

I'm also wondering if the corner performance is any different for the NEX-7.

I'm not seeing corner issues with Leica 35, 50, or 75mm lenses on 5n.  I haven't done a white-wall test, but close enough.  :)

If there were corner issues I'd have mentioned them. Not on any of 7 Leica lenses tested.

Michael, is you 5N really +/- 0.6ev on autobracket?  If so what firmware do you have?  Mine is +/- 0.3ev

"But, inexplicably, the camera's autobracketing mode is limited to +/- .6EV..."

Thanks

Use the Option soft key to select either 0.3 or 0.6EV.

I assumed as much but was secretly trying to tease out the same answer regarding the NEX-7. ;)

Michael said: "(Just buy a faster lens if you think you really need ISO 25,000)"

I'm sure you know better! That much depth of field loss at any given useable shutter speed is not an acceptable trade-off for ISO noise. If the scene demands, for example, f/8 at 1/125th to work, the wide-open lens speed is immaterial.
