« on: September 29, 2011, 03:13:43 am »

So... a friend calls for a family portrait 45 mins from my home... since is like family I tell him I wont charge my fee... He wants a 16x20 so I tell him its going to be $160... I explain that thats almost my cost... then he asks Is that framed? ... Long story short... he ends... I will think about it!
Can someone enlighten me? Please!

Very difficult situation.  I made a personal rule a long time ago, that when dealing with family, and friends that are like family, to either give them the prints that they want for free, or to not do anything.  It is my gift to them, or nothing at all.  And if they take advantage of me and they are family...that is what family is for.  If they take advantage of me and they are a friend...then they are not much of a friend.

Everyone is different, so you have to do what you think is right.

If the friend is a good one and has done favors for you, no big deal. If they just take advantage of you, you’ll have to evaluate the importance of continuing this kind of friendship.

There's a phrase that way too many photographers simply don't know...

No, thank you very much...

Solves a lot of problems (and avoids them in the first place).

Yup... I'm with Jeff here.  It doesn't matter if you're a doctor, a lawyer, auto mechanic or a photographer.  You do a friend a favour if you want, but outside of that you're a professional.  End of story.
